Tissues that support your capillaries will weaken as you get older. And since that happens, easy bruising can set in. Skin also becomes thinner as we get much older in years, and therefore, some of the protective fatty layer is lost. As a result, your blood vessels are more exposed, and easy bruising from even the slightest injury will result.
Be aware of blood thinning drugs such as Heparin or Coumadin. These drugs are mostly used in treating hyper coagulation problems, which is blood clotting. With your blood having a harder time in clotting, any injury or even a bump, can cause a lot of bruising and bleeding under the skin.
Prednisone and other steroidal drugs are sometimes more likely to cause easy bruising the longer you take them. This is due to the fact that corticosteroid drugs like Prednisone as a good example, cause your skin layers to become thinner, and thereby you don't have the needed protection.
Some supplements out there on the market can also cause you to bruise easier since they might have a tendency to produce a blood thinning effect. If you are taking blood thinning drugs already, you will need to watch any supplements which may not interact well with these drugs.
Hemophilia is a blood disorder that causes easy bleeding and bruises. This disorder causes symptoms such as, (1) bruises that are large and also deep, (2) the joints will cause swelling and pain, (3) blood that is present in urine or stools, (4) nosebleeds that happen often, and, (5) joints are not flexible. The basic cause of hemophilia is that the clotting factors are missing from the blood.
Liver disorders may also cause you to be more susceptible to bruising as well. Cirrhosis of the liver for instance, not only causes easy bruising, but you also have jaundice, itching, and tiredness.
Certain bone marrow disorders may cause very easy bruising. If the blood forming tissues are abnormal in the body, this would stand to reason that a person would have easy bruising problems.
Von Willebrand Disease is another condition that can cause a lot of bleeding since the blood doesn't clot normally. This disease is hereditary, and people who have it lack the Von Willebrand factor which is a certain protein you need in order to have a normalized blood clotting process. If you are having easy bruising, along with a lot of gum bleeding, nosebleeds that happen often, blood in the urine or from the rectum, it is time to see your doctor for diagnosis.
