Causes of Food Addiction

Jennifer Kirkman
Food addiction is really easy to get into for some of us. These people are those like the yo-yo dieters, of whom go up and down on their weight, and can never seem to take it off. Some of the signs that you are a food addict include:

*You are a yo-yo dieter. You lose enough weight to look good again, and then return to your old habits giving in to food cravings. It is a vicious cycle.

*You absolutely crave certain foods and you must have a certain large amount of them and you will go to the extremes to run out and get whatever it is to satisfy that craving, even if it involves driving far away somewhere at night to get it.

*Are you one of these people that cannot stop even when sub consciously, you know you are full? All of the food around you looks so good, that you must have a lot of it and you continue eating until you are so stuffed you nearly throw up?

*Do you continually eat all day long, never stopping? Some people have to not only have one doughnut, or one of a candy bar, but one dozen of these on a daily basis. This is where a lot of obesity stems from in people.

The causes of food addiction can be any number of psychological and medical factors involved. Many of them are psychological though. Some people are dissatisfied with their overall life in general, and this is where what we call emotional eating comes in. Food is the mainstay in some people's lives, it is their friend, their vehicle to handle their troubles and depressions, and whatever sorrows they may have. But after eating constantly, their underlying troubles don't go away. The real depression will remain inside the person, and they won't overcome it until they seek help.

The first step in recovering from food addiction, is for the person to realize that they have a problem that they are covering up by eating all of the time. The problem will not go away on its own until the person affected confronts their issues head on, and begins to work through it.

There are supportive weight loss programs out there for such an individual to overcome their specific problems with food. Attending meeting by Weight watcher's can help, but not with the underlying issues. Most people with this problem need help with a more in-depth psychological and physical/weight management eating program so that all issues are covered all the way around. Weight loss programs like I mentioned will only do one thing, and not solve the whole picture of what is really going on. Programs such as Rader programs are designed to meet the entire needs of an individual having this problem with food control and emotional issues. They have centers based throughout the US. This facility also has different levels of care to help people overcome their problems with food addiction.
