Causes of Ringing in the Ears

Tinnitus, the medical term for ringing in the ears, can be caused by many things. One of the main causes can be that you have an earwax blockage. When wax continues to build up inside the ear canal, it causes a ringing in the ears until they are undone. A lot of wax will also make the ears itchy, cause an earache possibly, and you won't be able to hear the more the wax is piling up. Adding some oil to the ears, waiting a few minutes and then letting it go should undo the ear. If not, you may need a professional to clean them out properly for you if the blockage is too bad.

If you have had any type of a head injury, such as concussion for instance, this is something which can cause a loud ringing in the ears. Concussions also cause vomiting, trouble with coordination sometimes, and sometimes disturbed vision. Concussions generally have to resolve on their own in a few days time.

Meniere's Disease, which affects the inner ear can cause a person to experience a lot of tinnitus along with loss of balance, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Meniere's Disease can be brought on by smoking, a lot of sinus and head allergies, stress, and respiratory infections. Meniere's Disease is often not very easy to treat. Doctors often have to experiment around and go according to your history to advise the right treatment.

Hypertension can cause a ringing in the ears. If your blood pressure is going up on the very high side, this will do that. Hypertension is generally asymptomatic, and most people don't even know that they have it. It is always a good idea to have your blood pressure looked at every six months, especially if you are at risk for this problem.

A ruptured eardrum is another big cause for the ears ringing a lot. Other symptoms connected with a ruptured eardrum are bleeding from the ear, trouble hearing, and the area also feels very full. When an eardrum has been ruptured, it will heal up slowly by itself within eight weeks or so. Pain medications may be given along with prophylactic antibiotics to prevent infection while it's healing.

If you are pregnant, and suddenly experiencing a lot of ringing in the ears during the 5th month or so of your gestation period, it may be preeclampsia. This condition along with ringing in the ear can cause a lot of weight gain, dark vomiting, and trouble with vision. This is because there is both loss of protein in the urine along with hypertension. If a woman is having this problem during her pregnancy, the baby will need to be delivered as soon as possible.

You and your doctor will have to evaluate your tinnitus and seek the best treatment for whatever the reason is.
