Causes of Seizures

Jennifer Kirkman
A seizure occurs due to electrical activity in the brain which is obviously not normal. A seizure may display itself as a body movement that is abnormal, problems with temporarily zoning out, or it might be in the form of an abnormal type of behavioral pattern. Each type of seizure has a name according to what type of bodily reaction is displayed and a cause for it.

Febrile seizures are seizures that can occur in children when they have a temperature that is very high. Though it looks pretty awful to watch, these seizures are not harmful. These types of seizures in kids can also occur due to post-vaccination with the common vaccines that kids receive, or something more serious such as meningitis which needs immediate medical treatments.

There are several types of epileptic seizures in the brain which can occur due to a person that has epilepsy. One type of seizure is a grand mal seizure. Grand mal seizures are full body seizures where the person has uncontrollable spasms, jerking, may lose bladder or bowel control, and are also in danger of losing consciousness during this seizure period. Epileptics can also experience a petit mal seizure. This seizure is simply known by many people as an absence seizure. What will happen, is the person will go into a period where they have no idea what is happening around them. If you try talking to them while they are having this type of seizure, they won't even realize you are there. They simply stare out into space for about a minute, and then come back into normal existence.

Status eplipeticus is another type of epileptic seizure which is worse than a grand mal seizure. Unlike the grand mal seizure, this seizure lasts for at least 30 minutes, and while it goes on, the person affected is jerking violently, and steadily. This is the most serious type of a seizure since it can cause death if not treated very seriously. These seizures are not only just caused by a severe case of epilepsy, but it can also be brought on by brain injury or tumors in the brain, drug overdose depending on what the drug was that was overdosed on, meningitis, or sudden cardiac arrest.

The temporal lobe in the brain, if it doesn't function properly can cause what is known as a complex partial seizure. What happens to a person that has this type of dysfunction in their brain is that they will have some very strange types of behaviorisms. They may do things like repetitively smack their lips over and over, walk round and round mindlessly as though they are pacing the floor, suddenly burst out laughing or crying for no apparent reasons, and some may appear to be delirious and talk outlandishly about seeing things that aren't there. These types of seizures can be treated with medications to control them. Surgery is also another option to take out the portion of the temporal lobe that is setting off these seizures. Whether or not a person is a candidate for this surgery depends on their individual case.
