Cavapoo Hybrid Dog Characteristics, Health and Care Guidance

The Cavapoo (Cavadoodle / Cockapoo) hybrid dog or referred to as a designer dog: Combination of two breeds, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Miniature Poodle. Characteristics and temperament of a Cavapoo dog traced back to their ancestry ("These small dogs have been popular in the United States since the 1950's 7). The breed requires care and attention for health issues. The Cavapoo makes a very good family pet but not a good watch dog or guard dog. 1

The Cavapoo breed created for the desire to have hypoallergenic features, non-shedding or low shedding dog ("with a poodle-type coat" 2), and good nature personality of the Cavalier Kings Charles Spaniel. 3 The breed enjoys exercise preferable within an enclosed area to run around or a brisk walk with a human companion (Cavapoos does well living in an apartment or condo due their small size, along with adequate exercise 1). The Cavapoo intelligence makes it a suitable dog to be trained for obedience, preferably during the early stage of life as a puppy. 3 Cavapoos are curious dogs that like to investigate things and jump onto furniture. 4 Cockapoo puppies require easily digestible nutrition including dry premium dog food, besides fresh water. "Bath your puppy at least once a week to prevent their skin from drying." 6

Other characteristics of the Cavapoo: Attached to their masters or family members, and desires not to be left alone for long periods of time. 3 Due to the good nature of the breed, gets along very good with other pets and children, however not a good protection against strangers. 4 The average weight of a Cavapoo 10 - 18 pounds and height eight - fourteen inches. Cavadoodle breed live up to 20 years but average life expectancy between 10 and 14 years. 3

Cavapoos health concerns traced back to their parent breeds including ear and eye problems (cataracts), hip dysplasia, and Thyroid issues. If the parents of the Cavapoo dog has fewer number of health problems, the off-spring has a better out-look for health issues. 2 "Depending on coat type, the Cavapoo requires brushing to prevent matting and tangling or professional clipping": Attention should be given to clean the ears and trim the nails. 1 Recommend few times a year, the Cavapoo coat be trimmed, otherwise hair may grow into dreadlocks. 3

The hybrid Cavapoo is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club and Designer Dogs Kennel Club. However, the breed is not reorganized by major purebred kennel clubs, even if their parents are registered purebreds. 2
