CBS Sitcom Preview - The Big Bang Theory

Zachary Fenell
The Big Bang Theory will return for its third season this fall on CBS. The Big Bang Theory is about roommates Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons). Leonard and Sheldon are scientists at CalTech. They often hang out with their friends and fellow scientists Rajesh (Kunal Nayyar) and Howard (Simon Helberg). While the four are geniuses in the world of science, socially they are inept. This makes for interesting interactions with Leonard and Sheldon's neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco), a pretty woman of average intelligence.

Out of the four male characters on The Big Bang Theory, Leonard is the best in social situations. Leonard even dated Penny for awhile but the relationship did not last. However, feelings still exist between the two which was revealed in the last episode of season two. Penny grows upset with Leonard for going to Alaska with his friends. The group is going to Alaska to perform a science experiment. Leonard is torn about going knowing he is going to miss Penny. Penny tells him to go but secretly wants him to stay. Penny and Leonard's feelings for each other should provide for interesting plot twists during the third season of the CBS sitcom.

The Big Bang Theory has not been an overnight success. The Big Bang Theory is the brain child of Chuck Lorre, the same man responsible for the hit CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men. The original pilot for The Big Bang Theory was not picked up by any networks. Determined to have another hit sitcom on his hands, Lorre rewrote the pilot and CBS finally picked up the show. Ratings for The Big Bang Theory remained steady for the first season and into the second season. Shortly into the second season The Big Bang Theory saw an increase in their ratings. With the rating increase CBS renewed the series for two more seasons.

A lot of The Big Bang Theory success can be credited to the character of Sheldon. Sheldon's gifted mind for science makes socializing a complicated task for him. Even Leonard, Rajesh and Howard can barely stand Sheldon at times. Imagine how the average person interacts with Sheldon. In fact some of the funniest moments of The Big Bang Theory involve Sheldon interacting with Penny. Actor Jim Parsons has even earned an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory.

The Big Bang Theory has moved into a new timeslot for the fall on CBS. The Big Bang Theory now airs at 9:30 pm as a part of CBS's LOL (Laugh Out Loud) Mondays. The new season of the CBS sitcom begins Monday, September 21st.
