CC Sabathia the First Pitcher to 10 Wins, and More

Ryan Michaels

On June 25th, Carston Charles Sabathia became the first major-league pitcher to reach ten wins this season. Sabathia was practically flawless, retiring nine batters (matching his season high) and even taking a shutout into the 8th inning. When being interviewed after his 8-3 win over the Colorado Rockies, ESPN reports Sabathia stated very clearly that the numbers meant nothing to him, reiterating that him and the Yankees were there to win championships and that other than that, nothing else matters.

Sabathia has been no letdown for the Yankees, picking up his 50th win for the team in his 85th start, according to ESPN. He is the first pitcher to achieve this feat for the Yankees since Chien-Ming Wang, whom he is now tied with for being the fastest Yankee to 50 wins in the last 30 years.

Sabathia, at thirty years old, according to data reported on Yahoo! Sports, is now 10-4 boasting a 3.25 ERA while getting the win in each of his last three starts. If Bartolo Colon is able to return in full form, he and Sabathia may just be enough pitching support to get the Yankees into and through the playoffs this year, an attribute originally labeled as the teams weakness by scouts and sports analysts alike. CC has gone 7-2, giving up more than 4 earned runs only twice since the beginning of May, per data reported by Yahoo!.

A Different Viewpoint:

While CC has now picked up 10 wins and won his last four starts, other stats tell a less flattering story of the Yankee's pitcher's recent performance on the mound. CC, as seen on his ESPN page, has given up fifteen earned runs with an ERA of 4.60 during the month of June. In addition, he was unable to hold his opponents to less than four runs during his previous three starts, during which an earned run average of 6.25 still managed to allow him to pick up three wins. Had CC lost these games, as many pitchers would have, he would be at an only somewhat respectable 7-7.

Though things are looking up for the Yankee rotation if C.C. keeps getting wins, once Texiera and the rest of the lineup slow down from their recent hot streaks, the outlook may be far bleaker for the Yankees.
