CD Review: Moros Eros - I Saw the Devil Last Night & Now the Sun Shines Bright

Grimley Jones
Victory Records is known for its extensive roster; however, the bulk grouping of bands and artists is often found docked to genres such as hardcore, punk, metal and emo/screamo. But it appears that Victory is determined to shed that circumscribed reputation with their 2006 release of Moros Eros, I Saw the Devil Last Night & Now the Sun Shines Bright. It has a strange yet endearing quality that makes the final second of the last song seem premature. Like any album that is a fresh burst of originality it leaves the listener with a lust for more tunes, notes, riffs and lyrics. Immixing ambient guitars, steady yet brisk drumming, plumping bass, 80's pop-esque keyboards and a vocal repertory that is grander than the Victory Records roster, Moros Eros provides enough sensory stimulation to raise the dead. The album's foremost song, "Today is the Day," is merely an appetizer to the rest of I Saw the Devil... as it offers a head nodding, foot tapping melody that builds you up for a sudden but necessary ending. Immediately after, "Today is the Day" things become beautifully mellow while visions of picnics and dancing couples may come to mind (or perhaps visions of rolling waves and...well you get the idea). From that point on it is hard not to find yourself fully engulfed and involved with this devilishly energetic CD. Moros Eros has managed to take every bit of music dear to them and bake a musical casserole that everyone can enjoy.
