CD Review: Wolfmother

Wolfmother Has Been Proclaimed as One of the Best Rock Bands of the Year, But Is it All Hype?

Monkeyman
Wolfmother's self-titled debut is one of rocks most talked about albums of the year. The album contains every thing a classic rock fan could ever ask for, with sound, riffs, and lyrics similar to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC.
Andrew Stockdale, the lead guitarist and singer has a style all his own. His high-pitched, almost mesmerizing voice in combination with pounding guitar riffs creates a sound that is almost impossible to replicate. Chris Ross on bass/keyboard and Myles Haskett on drums are the masters behind the rhythm section. During live shows, Chris switches between bass and keyboard quite often, and it is a sight to see as he has an incredible amount of energy, and flawlessly can transition between the two instruments.
To write the songs on the album, they would often go to different places to capture a certain mood for a song. Colossal, one of the albums darker songs, was written in a small concrete bunker with no windows. Many other artists have used this style of writing, but Wolfmother is able to maximize the potential of all of their songs by doing this. The lyrics on this album are more than up to par. Just by listening for one minute, you can hear the heavy influence of Sabbath and Zeppelin. They incorporate their own unique style with a little bit of their influences style to get lyrics that can bring out an array of moods in a matter of minutes.

The songs on the CD are as follows:
Dimension
White Unicorn
Woman
Where Eagles Have Been
Apple Tree
Joker & The Thief
Colossal
Mind's Eye
Pyramid
Witchcraft
Tales From The Forest Of Gnomes
Love Train
Vagabond

The CD won a few awards such as the Best Hard Rock performance at the 2007 Grammy's, and Best Breakthrough Album at the ARIA Awards, along with over a dozen other nominations. Along with these awards and nominations, they have also had a few honors as well. Most recently their song Woman has been featured in both the game and on the TV commercial for Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360. Joker & The Thief was used on the commercial for Jackass 2, and Love Train was featured on an Apple iPod commercial.

Overall, I would give this album a 9 out of 10, and I highly recommend that you check them out. This band is a force to be reckoned with, and should be here for years to come.

I like to play the guitar, go to concerts, and play basketball.  View profile
