COMMENTARY | If you suffer from Morgellons disease, you have been waiting for a CDC study to be completed. The study was for the purpose of finding out what causes the heinous disease. The report says there is no reason for Morgellon symptoms, unless you want to blame it on patients' mental health. Once again, a disease is said to be a mental disease because there are no other answers for it.
Think it's all in their heads? Baseball player Billy Koch, his wife and children and Joni Mitchell (singer) are all sufferers of Morgellons. In a 2006 interview with KTVU news, the Kochs talk about their family's ordeal with this disease. The interview also talks with a doctor at Oklahoma State University who says doctors need to take this condition seriously.
Not long ago, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue were thought to be caused by depression and other mental problems. There is still no answer as to what causes fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, but they are considered diseases now. Slowly but surely doctors are treating them as a physical ailment rather than depression. As a fibromyalgia sufferer, I know how the people that are suffering from Morgellons symptoms feel.
To lose all of your joy for life, be in pain, confused, and fatigued is a hell all its own. To have a doctor tell you that it is all in your head is devastating. The Morgellons study was done on less than 120 people. They all lived in Northern California and most were women. The researchers ruled out environmental causes, but did not investigate the patients' homes. They also did not say what the fibers were that came from the lesions. They call them cotton like, but they do not reveal what they are.
Many people think that Morgellons is a joke or a delusion. If you have doubts, go to the Living with Morgellons website. The stories that are posted there give you an idea of what these people are going through. It not only affects adults, but like the Kocks family, it affects kids too.
The CDC may have done a study, but I don't believe it was a substantial one. It leaves sufferers with more questions than answers. It also bursts the bubble of hope they were counting on.
