Celebrate America - but with Reason

A Poem for the 4th of July

Peter Flom
Each 4th of July
Each of us should ask why
We are proud to be an American.

For what do we stand
In our great land
Are we headed in the right way again?

Wars, torture and tax cuts
Freedom with ifs and buts
Are these our country's true meaning?

If we don't ask we fail
To honor what we hail
When we see the twilight's last gleaming.

More Americans need to reflect on these thoughts. Freedom is rare in the history of the world and we are about to lose what is left it if we don't wake up. Very thought provoking words.

Very well done, Peter. It's gotten to be just another day on the beach for a lot of people.
