Throw mom a green Mother's Day party. Any eco-conscious mom will love the idea of an environmental friendly Mother's Day celebration.
Encourage your guests to shop for Mother's Day gifts at the local thrift store. It's not only economical; it's the ultimate in recycling. When choosing Mother's Day gifts, make sure that they are green. This means choosing eco-friendly products that use recycled materials, are chemical free, and have not been tested on animals.
Schedule the Mother's Day party to begin during the day, no electricity used! If the weather permits, hold the eco-friendly party outside. The sun is an excellent eco-friendly light source and the wind is a totally green cooling method.
Instead of paper napkins, plates, and table cloths which kills trees and adds to landfills, use eco-friendly cloth napkins, table cloths, and china. Throw the napkins and tablecloth in with your regular laundry, no extra water wasted! If you do have to buy party gear, make sure they are made from recycled materials and are recyclable themselves.
Serve mom eco-friendly food. Buy local grown produce, if possible. Go vegetarian, meat production uses a vast amount of natural resources. Organic is key for an eco-friendly meal. Avoid products that have been sprayed with environmentally harmful chemicals.
Arrange a Mother's Day tree planting party. Trees are a necessary element to an eco-friendly green environment, they are home to little critters, they provide needed oxygen, and studies suggest that they serve to stem global warming.
Before Mother's Day, head out to the local nursery to pick up the saplings. Remember to keep in mind how many trees will fit comfortably in the area chosen. Choose trees that will thrive in your climate. For an added eco-friendly benefit for mom, pick out some fruit trees. Not only will the tree aid the environment, but mom will also enjoy the home grown organic fruit. Keep in mind, that most fruit trees need a partner for cross-pollination.
Have the family gather at the chosen spot on Mother's Day and make a ceremony out of the tree planting. Not only will your eco-friendly mom, its guaranteed to be a hit with the family children.
Have an eco-friendly Mother's Day kitchen renovation party. Where do many moms spend a lot of time? In the kitchen. So gather up family and friends and retro-fit mom's kitchen to be eco-friendly.
Install a garbage disposal for mom. This eco-friendly device cuts back on land fill waste.
Set-up a recycling center in mom's kitchen. Provide labeled recycling bins, a can crusher, and a list of what items are acceptable.
Install a skylight. This will allow your eco-friendly mom to cut down on energy consumption.
Insulate, insulate, insulate. Insulate mom's windows and doors to cut down on energy use. Take a dollar bill and close the refrigerator door on it. Does it stay put or slide down? If it slides down, mom's fridge is losing its seal. Replace the insulation strip. Use the same trick with the dish washer and oven.
If the oven is losing heat, tighten the door. Give mom an extra treat, and clean her oven. This will allow the oven to cook food more efficiently, use less energy, and this also guarantees a few extra hugs since nobody likes that chore.
Got a lot of money? Buy mom eco-friendly major appliances such as a convection oven, energy efficient washers and dryers, and a top and bottom refrigerators/freezer. These use less power then standard appliances and what mom wouldn't love new appliances.
Organize a Mother's Day community clean-up. Assemble family, friends, and neighbors and spend the Mother's Day weekend cleaning up your part of the world. Any eco-friendly mom will love the idea of contributing to the greening of the community.
Pick a part of the community that needs trash pick up, such as parks and roadways. Create teams, and pass out bags and gloves.
Take mom back to nature. Spend some quiet time with mom this Mother's Day as you take a nature walk through a local forest preserve or wildlife sanctuary. There is no better way to bring home the importance of being eco-friendly then viewing nature up close and personal. For an added treat, buy mom a pair of Earth Shoes.
These are but a few of the many ways that you can create an eco-friendly Mother's Day celebration. Any eco-friendly mother will love the idea of a green party and you will be doing your part in helping the world to go green.
