Celebrate Grandparents' Day

Grandparents often play a critical role in the life of a child. Today, grandparents act as caregivers, mentors and teachers. Many grandparents are there before and after school. They care for their grandchildren when parents go back to work. They attend games, recitals and concerts. Many times, holidays like this can be seen as Hallmark holidays, that is holidays for the sake of commercialism. However, grandparents are very involved with their grandchildren and deserve to be recognized during Grandparents' Day. Below are some suggestions for celebrating Grandparents' Day.

Handmade card
Celebrating Grandparents' Day should celebrate the relationship between the grandparent and grandchild. Therefore, having the child make a handmade card is a perfect way to celebrate Grandparents' Day. Collect interesting papers, brads, glue, and markers before you start. Also ask your child what they like most about spending time with Grandma and Grandpa. Use these little quips in the card. If your child and their grandparent have an inside joke or story, this can also be used in the card. It will help mark the time and will be a very memorable addition to a scrapbook.

Scrapbook
Grandparents love to show off pictures of their grandchildren. Putting together a small pocket sized scrapbook of the children with their grandparents is an excellent way to celebrate Grandparents' Day. The grandparents can carry it in a purse or a jacket pocket and it will chronicle all the happy times that they spend with their grandchildren.

An Outing
Grandparents love to spend time with their grandchildren. Grandparents' Day is a perfect time to foster those memories. A trip to the zoo, museum or park is a wonderful way to spend Grandparents' Day.

A Story

Have your children create a small storybook for their grandparents. This storybook can be about an adventure that the child shares with their grandparents. Have the child illustrate it, or take pictures of the child acting out the story. It is a creative way to put your child's imagination to work.

A Meal

Have your child help prepare a meal for the grandparents. This meal can include your child's grandparent's favorite foods. Creating the dessert is a great way for your child to become involved. Decorating a cake, cookies, or signature dessert for Grandparents' Day will certainly be a memorable part of the meal.

A Game

Have your child help you pick out a game that they would like to play with their grandparents. Give it to the grandparents. Whenever your child goes to visit, the game will be available for them to play together.
