A Brief History
March has been celebrated as "Music in Our Schools Month" since 1985 in the United States and across Europe. It has been a time to plan special musical-related activities and to showcase promising young musicians.
It first began in 1973, though, when the State of New York set aside a day in March to celebrate music in schools. During the 1970s and the early 1980s, it grew to a whole week in March; then in 1985, the National Association for Music Education declared the entire month as "Music in Our Schools Month".
Benefits of School Music Programs
Music programs teach student music history, as well as how to read and play music. They teach creativity and creative problem-solving, both of which benefit us outside the classroom. They teach perseverance; perseverance gives children the discipline needed to achieve excellence. They teach teamwork, risks and how to deal with fear, and self-expression.
Ways to Celebrate
There are various ways to celebrate "March is Music in Our Schools Month", depending on age and grade level. Here are a few ideas.
1. Allow the students to compose original songs, upon teaching them rhythm and form.
2. Study the history of music as it evolved over the centuries.
3. Learn about different instruments and what makes each unique.
4. Play songs, both common and unfamiliar, and have the students guess the title.
5. Host a concert for families and friends to enjoy.
Music is a great way for students to express themselves. It can be a welcome break during the tedious school day for many children, especially those who may have a hard time concentrating. Take advantage of the month of March to promote music education in your classroom.

Great report.
Good article Tonya. Music is so important in our lives. It is a life long skill. It seems like it is not so important to school officials like is should be. Many schools have cut their music programs but yet money is used towards sports and other programs that are not educational. Like David said, "It is a basic educational tool and need."
I can't even remember school...not sure if there was such as thing back in the dark ages!
It's an excellent idea. I think it's sad that music is one subject that is often taken out of the learning process for our children.
Fine reminder.... music is not enrichment - it is a basic educational tool and need!
