Mardi Gras is the kickoff to Carnival season. Meaning Fat Tuesday in French, Mardi Gras hearkens back to the traditions of indulging in decadent foods before beginning the fast that occurs during Lent. A last hurrah, if you will. That's why Mardi Gras celebrations are such over the top celebrations.

There are several great Mardi Gras events in Missouri, depending on your region. St Louis hosts the 2nd largest Mardi Gras event in the US, Mardi Gras on Soulard. Started over 30 years ago, this year's festivities began on Jan 6th with 12th Night. Mardi Gras on Soulard has several events that run throughout January and February. Events include wine and beer tasting, a Cajun cook-off, the Taste of Soulard, even a Masquerade Ball. However, the little ones aren't forgotten. Family friendly festivities include the Family Winter Carnival, Weiner Dog Derby, and the largest pet parade in the United States. The festivities culminate with the Light Up the Night Fat Tuesday Parade on February 21st.

If you're located in the southern part of the state, you should plan on visiting C Street Mardi Gras. While C Street Mardi Gras is in just it's second year, this experience has made it's mark on southwestern Missouri! Historic Commercial Street was the original downtown of north Springfield, MO. With C Street, as it's affectionately known to the locals, recently rehabbed and revitalized, this is the district's premier event. Taking place February 11th, this is sure to be a fun-filled night out. In an event-packed evening, there will be a semi-nude body painting exhibit, a drag show, a burlesque show, and plenty of live music. There's even a costume contest and dancing at a restored ballroom. It all starts with a bead run and the tapping of firkins of local craft beers. Roller Derby girls and Rickshaw rides will be on the street, as well. One of the best features Most of the events are 21+

You don't need to travel all the way to New Orleans to partake in fantastically fun Mardi Gras festivities. Laissez les bon temps rouler - or let the good times roll!
