Celebrate Mom in Seattle

Some believe that Mother's Day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greeks, but the modern tradition started with Anna Jarvis in 1907. In honor of her own mother, Anna sought the help of legislators and prominent businessmen to create a day to honor all mothers. Seven years later, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday to celebrate moms. The holiday is also celebrated in many countries throughout the world.

There are a lot of ways to honor our mothers, but one of the most popular is probably a nice dinner out. Quite a few restaurants in and around Seattle are offering specials for the occasion.

Chandler's Crabhouse at 901 Fairview Avenue North in the Lake Union neighborhood is the premier seafood restaurant in the area. Chef Kevin Rohr began his career almost 30 years ago and in addition to Seattle, has worked in places such as Miami, New York, and St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. He and his staff will be serving a special 3-course brunch from 9am to 2:30pm on Mother's Day. The cost is $30 for adults and $11 for children 6-10. Children 5 and under free. Reservations are required and can be made online or by calling 206-223-2722. Dress is casual, but no one will mind if you want to be a little more formal.

If you're looking for beautiful scenery in addition to a great meal, you can't beat the Salish Lodge & Spa above Snoqualmie Falls in Fall City. Chef de Cuisine Jack Strong and Sous Chef Matthew Mina are offering two special options for the day. From 7am - 3pm, enjoy a sit-down breakfast in the Dining Room. For $49 per person ($20 for children 6-12 and no charge for those under 5), enjoy Mimosas, pancakes, and a choice of omelets. Or, if you prefer a buffet brunch, the Ballroom will be serving from 10am - 4pm. A selection of breads and salads, a seafood station featuring shrimp and oysters, and a carving station with ham, New York strip loin, and cedar plank salmon along with a variety of desserts will be available for $67 per person ($23 for children 6-12). There is no dress code, but reservations are required. They can be made online or by calling 1-800-2.SALISH.

Danube Bistro, in the heart of downtown Bellevue, specializes in German, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, Russian and Italian cuisine. Beginning at 11am, their extensive menu will be available along with specials like Rack of Lamb, Grilled Hungarian Sausages and Chicken or Veal Perogies. Located in the Avalon Apartment building at 11000 NE 10th Street, dress is casual and free parking available. Call 425-452-8722 for reservations.

Lunch is served from 11-2 with entrees up to $15 and dinner entrees are up to $40. Be sure to save room for dessert. Reservations are available online or by calling 425-657-0373.

If you're looking for something truly extravagant, consider The Georgian at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel.
