Celebrate National Dance Day with Nigel Lythgoe of 'So You Think You Can Dance' July 31
Let it All Hang Out!
That seems to be the idea behind National Dance Day, which will take place July 31, 2010. Executive Producer and Judge of 'So You Think You Can Dance', Nigel Lythgoe, came up with the plan to show his commitment to dance education and physical fitness in the U.S.
While I love the idea, and really could stand to move a lot more, I'm afraid the only thing that will get me on my feet is for Nigel Lythgoe to come to my house bearing a bottle of scotch--and then he'd still have to pull me off the couch.
Of course, he'd tell me to sit right back down as soon as he saw my pitiful attempt at dancing. "Karan," he'd say. "Tonight is the last night you'll be with us." Then he'd show me the door--my own door! and there I'd be, turned out into the cold darkness.
Except it's July and hot as Hades, and it doesn't even get dark until 9 pm these days. And seriously, I do think anything that puts the spotlight on physical movement is a good thing. The idea is for people of all ages to get involved; if you want to do your own thing in front of the mirror go for it, but feel free to get the whole family involved. Organizations and communities can also put their feet together to celebrate movement and dancing in a variety of styles.
I just started watching SYTYCD this year--yeah, I know it's the seventh season--but it's easy to get hooked after watching just a few episodes. I enjoy watching the dance routines, even though I would have a better chance at learning to fly than I would at doing them myself.
One of the best things about SYTYCD is that it gives the competitors the opportunity to present themselves to the dance world. What's even better is knowing there are young kids out there watching, and dreaming of the day they will dance onstage.
If you have plans for National Dance Day, FOX wants to know about it. Complete this form by 11:59 pm ET on July 16, 2010 and you may be contacted by producers for details.
Then get ready to dance. As for me, I'll have that bottle of scotch first, thank you very much.
