Many of us think of Black History Month as a relatively new celebration when in actuality it was first celebrated as Negro History Week in 1926. This year, there are events all over New York City, both educational and entertaining for the whole family. New Yorkers enjoy celebrating the diversity of the city by celebrating each others festivals and events, and Black History Month is something to be enjoyed and celebrated by all the citizens of New York and the visitors to the city are more than welcome to join in and join in one of the things that makes New York so special.
American Museum of Natural History

One of my favorite places in New York City is the Museum of Natural History and this year they have a special Black History Month event that is free with the regular museum admission. Why not come and make this a day to visit the museum. It is the perfect opportunity to discover a true New York Treasure while learning about a true African American pioneer. Katherine Dunham was a multi talented person, anthropologist, dancer, choreographer and teacher. Ms. Durham passed away in 2006 and this is a celebration of her life and the contributions she made. What better way to celebrate than with music. Sedalia To Harlem:A Musical Celebration Of Black History Month honors the contributions of Black Americans to classical music. Bring the children and let them experience something new.
New York University

New York University is hosting a large variety of free events all month long. All they ask is that you bring one non perishable food item for their food harvest program. Seating can be limited for these events, so if you want to attend any contact them as soon as possible.

This is not a complete list by far of everything going on for Black History Month in New York. There will be many more events announced. Many of the churches throughout the city will have special events going on as well.
