Celebrating Christmas During a Recession

Christmas Can Be Celebrated Even During a Financial Crisis

Celebrating Christmas is something that most people want to do with family and friends. The house is usually decorated from top to bottom, so is the tree. There are a ton of gifts under the tree just waiting for little kids to rip them open on Christmas morning then play with the paper instead. So how do you manage to celebrate Christmas in a recession as your income is decreasing and costs are rising? It can be done and you don't have to go completely broke to do it.

Decorations

Reuse the decorations from past years. During a recession isn't the time to go out and buy completely new decorations. You can make do with what you have, and still enjoy the holiday season. The lights should only be on for a few hours a day and turned off before going to bed.

Spending Limits

During a recession putting a limit on how much family members can spend on gifts will ensure that no one feels left out. It will also prevent those that can't manage to give as much from feeling bad. If your situation makes gift giving difficult you can always draw names and do the secret Santa to make it easier.

Homemade Gifts

Making your own Christmas gifts is a great way to stock the bottom of the tree during a recession. It's not how much a gift cost you to purchase but the thought behind the gift that actually counts. In a recession the money you have is likely to be limited, and you want to make it stretch as far as it will go. If you know someone likes candles, or jam then you can make these for them and put a bow on them. These are thoughtful and useful gifts that won't hurt your wallet during the recession.

Get Creative

Celebrating Christmas during a recession means that you have to get creative. Wrapping the gifts in newspapers or paper bags that you decorate yourself will make it a little easier on you at Christmas. Money on wrapping paper can cut into the gifts especially on a tight budget. The money that would have been spent on wrapping paper can be used to help with dinner.

Family Dinner

While families usually get together to have a mini-reunion at Christmas and hold a large dinner it may not be possible for one person to host during a recession. Making it a joint effort with everyone bringing at least one dish will help to ensure that the family Christmas dinner is still had.

Christmas in a recession requires careful planning. You also have to remember that the most important thing isn't the gifts that are given but being together with your family.
