Christmas in a Foreign Country

Christmas, the celebration time to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, is an annual holiday. Schools and work-places tend to be in the mood of celebration, gift-giving that lasts for over ten days. This is also the perfect time to take a vacation to a new place and celebrate with friends and family.

However, the months of November and December being the holiday season, it would be wise to book the airfares, hotels and transportation well in advance. London as a destination offers exclusive Christmas events, Theatre events, tastefully decorated malls and markets, musical events - there is everything for every age group.

The Christmas lights go on in Oxford Street, Regent Street, Covent Garden and Bond Street. The lighting ceremony of the huge Norwegian spruce Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square officially announces the holiday season. First Thursday in December makes London the place to be. The Trafalgar Square becomes the main focus of New Year's Eve celebrations too.

Londoners like to be a lot crazy and there can be no better time to get cozy than winter. Although most visitors from overseas to London come during the warmer months, the number of visitors from within the United Kingdom is highest between January and March.

The reason for more visitors during the winter is for the bargains and shopping. Winter off-season rates for airfares and hotels can sometimes be surprisingly low. You can expect almost a 20 percent discount. If you continue to stay after Christmas, then you can also take advantage of the post Christmas sales.

London develops a lovely buzz during the Christmas season. The stores are decorated, lights are lit everywhere, carols are sung, special holiday pantomimes are provided, and the giant Norwegian spruce goes up in the famous Trafalgar Square.

You may think a trip to London is prohibitively expensive because of its transatlantic flight, but you can often find bargain airfares to this popular spot that are cheaper. Another good news to save a bundle of money is that you do not need to rent a car in London. Special reduced price transportation passes called London Travel cards,, make getting around the city relatively inexpensive.

The cost of accommodations takes the biggest bite from your budget. Fortunately, because you book the rooms well in advance, you will know this expense before you leave on vacation. Recently, London has emerged as one of the great food capitals of the world, known for the variety of its restaurants and the overall quality of the cooking.

London provides countless pubs, local restaurants, cafes and sandwich shops where you can dine cheaply and well. Moreover, many of the best London restaurants offer two and three course fixed price meals that can be real bargains.

If you are not a resident of the European Union, you can get a VAT refund on purchase made in the United Kingdom. Never pay for hotels, meals, or purchases with traveler's checks denominated in any currency other than British pounds. You get a bad exchange rate if you try to use them as cash.
