Celebrating Mother's Day in the Washington, DC Area

Mother's Day will be here before you know it, so it may be good idea to start planning a fun-filled day for that special lady now. In the Washington, DC Area, there are tons of activities that Moms can enjoy. A box of candy and flowers are so cliché these days that most moms don't even want that. Give them something special that, an entire day that honors how important they are to you.

Breakfast, Brunch, and Dinner are always good on Mother's Day and there are a couple of places that I highly recommend. Ardeo, in Northwest, is great for brunch, which will begin serving from 11am to 3am. They serve modern American cuisines, but you can also get a bit of Mediterranean and French dishes as well. Dino, also located in Northwest, serves Italian style cuisines and will have great brunch, lunch, and dinner meals throughout Mother's Day. Regardless of what restaurant you choose to take that very special Mom, she should enjoy a nice meal in a lovely atmosphere.

I always enjoy visiting Mount Vernon and the George Washington mansion and plantation. On Mother's Day, there will be an event on the plantation grounds from 10am to 3pm, showcasing Martha Washington (obviously and Impersonator) who will be taking photographs with visitors and handing out lavender sachets for all mothers. As usual, the tour grounds will be open, allowing visitors to tour the mansion and plantation of George Washington. In Gaithersburg, the Kentlands Mansion will be hosting a Breakfast and Luncheon from 10:30 am to 1pm. Tickets are pretty pricey ($25 for adults and $10 for Children), but I've been to this mansion twice on Mother's Day and the food has always been great. This event is reservation only, so it would be a good idea to reserve now.

Cruises on the Potomac River are always good, especially in May when the weather will be nice and the breeze from the water will be just right. Why not take Mom on a nice cruise on Mother's Day? There are five major Potomac River Cruise companies (Capital River Cruises, the Potomac Riverboat Company, Odyssey, Spirit, and the Dandy Restaurant Cruise Ships). I've always preferred the Odyssey over the other ships, but they all have the same type of atmosphere. All of the Cruises give a sightseeing tour of Washington, DC and they provide great three or four course meals for guests.

The Washington Women's Chorus is also having a Mother's Day concert and silent auction on May 10th in McLean, VA at the McLean Community Center at 7 PM. People can come and hear pop songs about mom, and maybe bid and win a trip to the Cayman Islands for her!
