1 Chevrolet Chevelle SS (1969-1970). This mid-size Chevrolet was originally an intermediate A-body. But within a few years, became one of the meanest muscle cars on the road. The 1970 Chevelle was a proud year and would rise its name into superstar status, in the muscle car world. The 1970 Chevelle SS 454 (LS6) would go on to become the most popular Chevrolet muscle car of all time. The 1970 model introduced the monster big block 454CID. Along with more body restyling, a more sculpted appearance, dual head lights and a larger rectangle grill. A restored version of this car could easily cost over $30,000. It's original price was only $2,800. Not a bad investment, at all.
2 Plymouth Roadrunner (1969-1970). You could call this a unique muscle car, in that is not fragile. Unlike other muscle cars, the Roadrunner was built for serious street work. All Par calls it a favorite of moonshiners, because it was faster than any police car, and was tough enough to take any bump. The disadvantage of the Roadrunner is that it was not built with aerodynamics. And oddly enough this car was based on the cartoon, the horn goes beep beep!, and was featured in the ad campaign along with Wiley Coyote. The air cleaner even featured the cartoon logo "Coyote Duster". How cool is that!? The original Roadrunner cost under $3,000. See current price and specifications here.
3 Dodge Charger RT 440 Magnum (1969-1970). The Dodge Charger is called one of the most popular and famous muscle cars of all time. The TV hit show, The Dukes of Hazzard, featured this car and brought it much success. This car was also very successful in the NASCAR circuit during the late 1960's and early 1970's. This fueled the success of the car. V8 engines, rotating headlights, electroluminescent dash panel, rear spoiler were just a few of the amenities available on a Dodge Charger. Prices today for a Dodge Charger range from $10,000-$100,000.
4 Plymouth Barracuda AHRA (1969). The first Barracuda's (1964) came with the Valiant option package providing 180 horsepower, 273 cubic inch V8, 225 slant 6 on the base engine. Gas mileage was 16-19. But, by 1969 the 'Cuda was redesigned for a performance Barracuda package. There was a limited number of 440 Darts and Barracudas produced. The Barracuda originally sold for a base price of $2,512.
5 Shelby Mustang (1969-1970). The 1969 Boss 429 was essentially a modified Mach One. This car got some additional suspension tweaks and race car motors added to them, but didn't get roll bars or fancy fiberglass fenders. This car was known to disappear in the blink of an eye, and stopped pursuers dead in their tracks. And it could leap obstacles in a single bound.

Post a CommentGood article, Renee. When I was in high school I had a friend who had a Roadrunner with a 383 in it. I can remember doing 130 mph down the freeway one night. He told me he still had about an inch before the gas pedal would hit the floor. His brother had a Dodge GTX with a 440 in it.
Great choices:)
