Celebrities:

What the Heck Are They, Anyway?

Derek Odom
Is anyone else upset that people today can do just about anything and become a celebrity? Let me take that back. Actually they don't have to DO anything anymore to achieve instant celebrity status!

Drug addicts, criminals, morons who sue big corporations, even the children of actual celebrities can now claim this status. Why? Paris Hilton has never done a thing, and yet we all know her name! I guess it helps that daddy is the owner of a large chain of luxury hotels, huh?

What about Rodney King? The police were accused of using excessive force on him while he was in a drug-induced fury, and to this day he is still a household name. Was it the camera? Probably.

Oh, and we cannot forget Jared, who was catapulted into celebrity status, simply by not being obese anymore! Or Nicole Richie, who has also done nothing except be related to a real celebrity, and go on horrible crash diets.

Oprah now has guests on her show via Skype, and some of these jokers are attaining celebrity status, simply for having an opinion! A few other shows are doing this as well, as if we cared what some housewife in Indiana has to say about a really important topic.

Some celebrities from the past are re-attaining their status, by being in the worst condition of their entire lives twenty years later. Haim and Feldman are losers with substance abuse and temper problems, and they have their own show! Christopher Knight, one of the dopey Brady kids, is dating the world's hottest female and refuses to acknowledge it. He also has his own show.

Vanilla Ice lost his musical following and hit rock bottom, and he can be found on a number of reality shows. The guests of Bret Michael's "Rock of Love" are instantly famous, and of course, the worse they act the more camera time they get.

In my opinion, these dope-addicted wash-ups are stealing the limelight from those who deserve it. What about the fireman who saves several small children from a burning building? How about the teacher who turns a bad apple into a college graduate through love and compassion? Let's see the single mother who works nine jobs and supports a huge family, and watch her kids become successful members of society because of her dedication!

I understand, really, I do. Reality TV is entertaining, and it is nice to watch folks who are in worse shape than we are. However, it isn't inspirational, and it isn't wholesome. We need to bring back some Little House on the Prairie values and refuel our desires to watch people doing the right thing once in a while, instead of seeing them gain more fame each time they do something wrong. Ultimately, it is up to us, the viewers, to decide what is aired!

Very true D, very true, but then again look at the IQ level of the people we are making shows for... oh sorry that was my outside voice.
