Celebrities Who Proposed on Stage

Andrea Coventry
An onstage wedding proposal sounds like a romantic dream come true. For some celebrities these dreams have turned into Happily Ever After fairytales. Others have had the nightmare of the public break-up. And for some, it is still too soon to tell.

Aaron Carter and Kari Ann Peniche
Back in September of 2006, at the tender age of 18, singer Aaron Carter proposed to actress Kari Ann Peniche during a performance in Las Vegas. And then a week later, he broke it off, claiming it was a rash decision that he had made in the heat of the moment, and conceding he was too young.

Aaron Carter was a teen pop sensation, as well as younger brother to former Backstreet Boy Nick Carter. Kari Ann Peniche was once Miss Teen USA, former Playboy Playmate, as well as the ex-girlfriend of Nick.

A.J. McLean and Rochelle Kardis

Former Backstreet Boy, A.J. McLean celebrated his 32nd birthday by proposing to his girlfriend, Rochelle Kardis, at the Hard Rock Hotel's Wasted Space nightclub on January 8, 2010. Supposedly, he had just purchased the engagement ring at the Hard Rock Hotel jewelry store a few hours before the show. While friends knew he was planning to eventually propose, everyone was surprised when A.J. called Rochelle up on stage. When he got down on one knee, she joined him. He proposed, and she said yes.

Bobby Brown and Alicia Etheridge

Bobby Brown proposed to his girlfriend, manager Alicia Etheridge, at the annual Funk Fest in Jacksonville, FL, on May 7, 2010. He called her up on stage, where she came with their eleven month-old son Cassius. He then got down on one knee, asked her to marry him, and she said yes.

Bobby Brown had a successful solo musical career after his years with the 1980s boy band New Edition. He was just as famous for his abusive marriage to singer Whitney Houston. Alicia is his manager.

Eddie Vedder and Jill McCormick

Eddie Vedder took advantage of a grand stage on December 4, 2009, when he proposed to longtime girlfriend Jill McCormick during the Kennedy Center Honors for Bruce Springsteen. The Pearl Jam front man and model have been together for several years, and have two daughters.

Vedder was previously married to a long-term girlfriend,

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood

Country rock stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood had known each other for years, as she had opened for his tour in the late 1980s. They remained friends, and started dating after each of them had succumbed to failed marriages.

On May 25, 2005, Garth and Trisha went to the unveiling of Brooks' 8-foot statue at Buck Owens' Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, CA. In front of over 7000 fans, Garth went down on one knee, took off his hat, and asked her to marry him. They've been happily married ever since.

Jamie Kennedy and Jennifer Love Hewitt

Comedian Jamie Kennedy had been performing for a couple of hours at the Laugh Factory in Long Beach, CA on July 18, 2009, when he called his girlfriend Jennifer Love Hewitt onstage. The plan was for her to sing and help with some jokes. But then a fan called out, "Marry her!" So, Kennedy got down on one knee and asked. She said yes.

Apparently, Hewitt had given Kennedy somewhat of a timeline, saying that if they had not progressed to the next level within a year, there was something wrong with the relationship. Reports of the engagement were denied by both of their reps, and the two called it quits in March of 2010.

Jamie Kennedy and Jennifer Love Hewitt met on the set of their show The Ghost Whisperer.

Jason Mesnick and Melissa Roycroft/Molly Malaney

Jason Mesnick became infamous after starring on the 13th season of The Bachelor. The purpose of the show is for a single man to date a panel of eligible women. They go through several rounds of eliminations as he whittles his choices down to one special lady.

Throughout the course of the season, Mesnick played the finalists, Molly Malaney and Melissa Roycroft off each other, telling them that he was in love with the other. But at the final rose ceremony, he proposed to Melissa. Then came the shocking twist during the live finale in which he broke off his engagement to Melissa, claiming to still be in love with Molly.

In October 2009, Jason and Molly officially announced their engagement. Melissa is now engaged to her longtime friend Tye Strickland.

Jason Sehorn and Angie Harmon

Jason Sehorn surprised girlfriend Angie Harmon while she was appearing on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on March 13, 2000, by coming out onstage and proposing during the program. Sehorn had arranged with the "Tonight Show" staff to propose to Harmon during her interview. After Angie accepted, her father came onstage to give his blessing.

The couple was married June 9, 2001 and now has three children.

Angie Harmon is an actress best known for her work on TV shows, such as "Law and Order." Jason Sehorn was playing for the NY Giants at the time of the proposal, and is now an NFL analyst.

Johnny Cash and June Carter

Johnny Cash's onstage proposal to June Carter became immortalized in the 2005 movie Walk the Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. In real life, Johnny proposed to the love of his life when the two musical legends were performing together in London, Ontario, Canada. A week later they were married.

Johnny and June had six children from their previous marriages to others, but together had one son, John Carter Cash. They remained happily married until June's death on May 15, 2003. Johnny soon followed on September 12, 2003.

Johnny Quinn and Marianne Rokke

Drummers are usually hiding in the back of the stage, providing the foundation for the rockers up front. But that didn't stop Snow Patrol drummer Johnny Quinn from stealing the show in September of 2007.

During the final song of their set in Bangor, the band's hometown, Johnny hung his proposal on his drum kit. The camera zoomed in on it, so that his question was made public on the big screens behind him. He had to anxiously await her answer, but the two were wed on August 16, 2008.

Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood

Marilyn Manson proposed onstage to longtime on-again-off-again girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood on Monday, January 4, 2010, while performing in Paris. The two have been together since 2006, though they took a hiatus in 2008, then broke up again to get back together in 2009.

Marilyn Manson is 41 years old and famous for his "shock rock." Evan Rachel Wood is 22, and known for her work on the HBO series True Blood.

Shooter Jennings and Drea de Matteo
While performing onstage at the Stanley Center in Utica, NY on June 11, 2009, singer Shooter Jennings proposed to longtime girlfriend, actress Drea de Matteo. Later that night, Jennings confirmed the engagement on his Twitter account.

Shooter, a singer in his own right, is the son of late rocker Waylon Jennings. Drea has starred on shows such as The Sopranos, Joey (Friends spin-off)and Desperate Housewives. The two have been together for several years, and had a daughter named Alabama Gypsy Rose on November 28, 2007. Drea was there, with Alabama, and her parents were in the audience.

Add me to list that did not know so many stars did this. I probably knew about Cash/Carter ~ read Johnny's bio and saw the film.

And this is only a partial list....many more have happened over the years. The best I've ever gotten was a shout-out and "Happy Birthday" sung to me by two headlining bands at a festival on my 21st birthday. :-D (Ok, it helps to know musicians....)

  • Alexandra Morgan5/14/2010

i had no idea that so many proposed onstage.

  • Tricia Goss5/14/2010

    Really interesting!

  • April Higney5/14/2010

Really cool article, I never knew so many did this publicly. (I'm not a huge TV buff beyond certain shows...so I miss a lot of limelight ongoings) ~Enjoyed reading this! (see I'd rather read, draw, or write than watch much T.V. ~ I only know certain names of some famed, others by sight having watched a movie) So its great getting to read these types of articles! Thanks for this! (how sweet it is!)
