Celebrities: Should They Just STFU?

Why Are Celebrities Bashed for Giving Their Opinions?

Sin Lucas
Below you will find the YouTube video of Matt Damon giving his opinion of Sarah Palin, McCain's seeming unusual VP pick. You can watch the video for yourself, but in a nutshell Damon says that Sarah Palin scares the s**t out of him, which is the same way a lot of us feel, but when I say it it's ok. People might not agree with me, but they do believe that it's my first amendment right to say what I please, to voice my opinion as I see fit. But when celebrities such as Damon and Madonna give their opinion they are bashed by bloggers, commentators, politicians, and the same everyday people whose money has made these people rich.

So, the question is, why aren't they allowed to give their opinion? Why isn't Matt Damon's opinion just as valid if not more so than anyone else? Does the fact that he has millions of dollars and millions of adoring fans make his thoughts and opinions any less valid than anyone else's.

And if you don't like his or any other celebrities opinion then you only have yourself to blame becausesIf you think about it Matt Damon or any of the other outspoken celebrities would not have such a platform if the fans hadn't built if for him, but now he's not allowed to speak on it?

We can't censor people and tell them to shut up just because we don't agree. A lot of good has come from celebrities speaking their minds about key issues. Take U2's Bono for instance. He is constantly and continually speaking out for Africans and others that are dealing with AIDS and famine. Take Angelina Jolie, she is constantly speaking up for children and children's rights and has shed a lot of light on the dire conditions that children around the world live in. American Idol for the last few seasons has dedicated a entire show to raising money for those less fortunate and how did they do that, by having celebrities come on the show and ask you to open up your pockets and you did it in record numbers.

Bill and Melinda Gates have given more money than anyone person could count to charities and schools around the world. Oprah Winfrey, who is now being boycotted by some overzealous female Republican group in Florida for not having Sarah Palin on her show, has give millions on top of millions to charities, but because of her political views that group in Florida has thrown her good deeds out the window and the Vice President for the group organizing the boycott, Cindry Graves, "To have the first vice president of our lifetime on the Republican ticket being a woman and to sit it out regardless of what her personal political beliefs were was disingenuous, we felt." So if you are to believe Ms. Graves, Oprah is some how against women's rights because she won't have Palin on the show until after the election, but Ms. Graves never once speaks about all the things the talk show host has done for women, including building a school in Africa for little women that more than likely wouldn't have had a chance at a education.

So the point is this, you made these people what they are, you and I have made them higher and brighter than the rest of us. They are as the media says the "A list", but they are also just human and they are allowed to have an opinion whether you agree with it or not.

The only opinion that matters in this world comes from celebrities. There are hierarchies of celebrities, and they should freely criticize each other. It is when non-celebrities start criticizing celebrities that a great transgression occurs.

and Blowhard, the caricature you painted about the Gulfstreams, Rolls Phantom, St Tropez, etc, more closely resembles the lives of multi-millionaire and billionaire, Republican voting, conservative minded corporate executives, rather than liberal actors and artists in general. They are the true elitists and the ones who weild far more political power than Matt Damon or any other celebrity.

Blowhard--one more thing--your snarky comments about celebrities being rich and out of touch is unfair and simplistic. As a matter of fact, many successfull and wealthy actors at one time struggled just to get by, working multiple jobs, and often work their asses off for years just to get the small break that could make their career. This is a concept you conservatives usually applaud, but when it comes to celebrities, your love of hard work in this land of opportunity suddenly goes out the window. This kind of f*cking inconsistency drives me crazy.

I believe that everyone has a right to their opinion, but it only becomes a stfu when it's a liberal celebrity that is not being to nice to a republician politician. If the republicians were so anti celebrity then why did they have all those old celebrities at the RNC. John Voight was speaking on behalf of McCain and the Repubs on Larry King during the DNC. They use main stream songs and artist during their convention, but these celebrities see nothing wrong with them so they get to speak.

A celebrity opinion is just an opinion like everyone else's and they are entitled to it.

The idea that celebrities should shut up is one of the stupidest ideas among the thousands of stupid ideas that right wingers throw around. Blowhard, are you a politician? If not, according to your logic, you are better off shutting the f*ck up, and your opinion should be discounted. Taking that a step further, all of us that are not "politicians" should shut up and our opinions don't matter and should be "bashed". I mean seriously, this idea that celebrities don't have a right to speak about politics is an idiotic premise. Are they not citizens just like you and I? Also, I donl't see teh blowhards of teh world complaining when idiot celebrities run for office as Republicans (Arnold, Ronnie, Clint, Sonny bono, Fred Thompson ,numerous athletes). Apparently, they are allowed to speak their mind and even run for office, but Matt Damon and George Clooney should shut up? See how stupid this is?
