Celebrities Who Are Vegetarians

Meet a Few Notable Non-meat Eaters

D. S. Ploshay
Not all loaded celebrities will dish out a pretty penny on an expensive steak dinner at such high-class eateries as Ruth Chris Steakhouse. Yep. They'd much rather indulge in bean sprouts and tofu.

When hunger strikes in Hollywood, you may be surprised at how many notable folks opt for vegetarian food. Some embark on a vegetarian diet for ethical reason, some for health reasons and some, well, just because. A few will occasionally eat fish and some who are less strict will occasionally have meat. Some use their star status to promote vegetarianism, while others just live the lifestyle.

Here is a look at some famous vegetarians:

Albert Einstein
He was a genius. How could he be wrong? According to an old quote from the world's most famous intellect, "Nothing will benefit human health or increase the chances for survival of life on earth as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."

Pamela Anderson
Is it her PETA ads that give it away? Ms. Anderson chose the vegetarian lifestyle for ethical reasons, and today is one of the most vocal advocates for animals. She told GoVeg.com that "there is nothing glamorous about chewing on the corpse of a tortured animal." She explains that being cruel to farm animals is nothing different than being cruel to a household pet-which there are laws against.

Mr. (Fred) Rogers
Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood was a show all about values. Mr. Rogers had some of his own: not eating animals. In a WQED-TV tribute to their former friend and coworker, one colleague of Rogers commented on his experimenting with vegetarian sandwiches. "They were special, like him," he said.

Casey Casem
You won't find any meat on this famous disc jockey's top 40 list of foods. The host of 'Casey's Top 40,' according to jewishveg.org turned down lucrative ad contracts with potential clients that aren't animal-friendly. Those ads conflicted with his dedication to a vegetarian diet.

Mary Tyler Moore
Ms. Moore feels that eating a piece meat will one day be a piece of history. She commented on GoVeg.com that It may take a while, but there will probably come a time when we look back and say, 'Good Lord, do you believe that in the 20th century and early part of the 21st, people were still eating animals?'"

Weird Al Yankovich
His first big hit was a parody of "My Sharona" called "My Bologna." (imdb.com). But Weird Al banned bologna and all other meat from his diet when he became a vegetarian in 1992.

Bob Barker
No price on meat is ever right for this game show host legend. Did you know that he even quit hosting the Miss USA pageant in 1979 because the beauty queens donned fur coats? (Soure: SAVE: Student Advocates for a Vegetarian Ethic)

Chelsea Clinton
At any 2008 campaign fundraiser for her mother, you can bet there will be a vegetarian offering for this first daughter.

Meat Loaf (Marvin Lee Aday)
Yes. We're serious. Despite having a stage name that makes you think of mom's home cookin', at least at one point in his life, Meat Loaf was a vegetarian. (Answers.com)

The Beatles
Yep. All of 'em. At GoVeg.com there is a quote from Paul McCartney that sums up his choice: "If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That's the single most important thing you could do. It's staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty."

Shania Twain
Canadian country crooner Shania Twain says she feels odd eating another living thing, thus has adopted the vegetarian lifestyle.

Gathered from various other online sources, here are a few others: Michael J. Fox, Brad Pitt, Naomi Watts, Gwenyth Paltrow, Jane Goodall, Jerry Seinfeld, Ted Danson, Rhea Pearlman, Natalie Portman, Demi Moore, Alicia Silverstone, Avril Lavigne, Ashely Judd, Tobey Maguire, Steve Martin, Moby, Christy Brinkley, Virginia Madsen, Ricki Lake, William Shatner, Bob Dylan, Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom, Alec Baldwin and many, many more.
