Celebrity Adopt-a-Country

Angelina has Sudan. Bono has...all of Africa.

As huge mega-stars, they don't have to donate $19 a month to Feed the Children. They can take on political responsibility for an entire country. For instance, Angelina Jolie recently criticized President Obama for not taking sooner action to better the lives of people in the Darfur region.

Occasionally you hear similar criticism from celebrities like Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and George Clooney.

I understand why she is critical of the Administration. Sudan is in horrible shape. As she said in her statement to Obama, it can hardly get any worse.

Unfortunately Angelina, there are a lot of other problems the Administration has to take care of. We are in this war that it seems we can never get out of. Sort of a problem for the country.

But... I have a solution. Brad, Angelina, George, you guys are incredibly rich. Can't you yourself improve the region, by hiring contractors to consult with crop planners, build wells and schools and help impoverished women sell native handicrafts? It would only take a few dozen million of dollars at the most. You can afford it.

As for dictators and political instability, of course you can afford to pay people to assassinate people.

Wait, strike that. I don't think I can publish things like that. I do in no way endorse the assassination of anybody, even if they are an evil ruthless dictator.

And Angelina does go on to say that she admires the president's diplomatic policy, and just wants him to act sooner.

Which brings me around to my idea, of the Rich and Famous adopting impoverished regions all over the word. They could even put up their own signs and everything, and pictures of themselves in expensive clothes, for the admiration of the people.

Also, they may sponsor regions such as Eastern Alabama and Lower Mississippi. Or Detroit. If anyone needs a celebrity adoption, it's Detroit. Although not technically as cool as someplace like Darfur.

Just think about it, if you have a few extra millions to spend.
