When Roberts brought up the hip hop singer's 2009 assault on Bermudan songbird Rihanna one too many times, Chris Brown emphasized he wasn't there to talk about "stuff that happened two years ago." He held it together until right after his live performance. Backstage, he exploded, breaking a window and storming out of the building shirtless! Brown later apologized on BET's 104 & Park show, saying he was "disappointed" in the way he acted himself. It was a far cry from his tweet right after the GMA interview, when he griped about Charlie Sheen being praised for bad behavior. That's why these apologies come off so fake but now that Chris has been rewarded, he should have no complaints.
Justin Bieber also joined the Celebrity Apology Club in March with a mea culpa to his fans for flipping his middle finger at some paparazzi. Bieber's fans got very angry when their boy was accused of cussing at a production manager at an Australian TV appearance last year. One proclaimed: "he is an inisint [sic] boy," while Justin maintained it was a lie invented by jealous adults. This time around, there was photo evidence so an apology was the only way the tween heartthrob could wriggle out of it.
Talk show host and comedian, George Lopez, lobbed a childish fat joke at Kirstie Alley, comparing the "Dancing With the Stars" contestant to a pig: "She did a nice job, her little hooves tapping away." Kirstie was ready to go to twitter war, but Lopez planned strategic amends: "I misjudged the joke. No malice was intended and I apologize to Kirstie." He followed up with an invitation to his show and a slew of flowers. Impressed with the floral action, Kirstie relented and forgave. How touching, but "insult, apologize, invite-on-show" seems to be a pattern on "Lopez Tonight."
Relatively happy endings so far, but comedian Gilbert Gottfried's reprehensible tweets, making fun of Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami, really cost him. He was fired as the voice of the Aflac duck. His apology soon showed up: "I sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended ... I meant no disrespect, and my thoughts are with the victims and their families." How impressed can we be when he followed up with a video mocking tragedies through the ages?
