Celebrity Fashion Trends to Skip: Drop-Crotch Pants, High-Waisted Jeans and More

Here Are Four Celebrity Trends to Avoid and, More Importantly, Why

Erin Ashley Darling
Although we often look to celebrities for style inspiration, there are times when our favorite fashionistas (or, perhaps, their stylists) lead us astray. It's often not a reflection on their usual fashion sense. Between staying on top of the ever-changing trends and feeling the pressure to make a statement at parties and red carpets, they're all bound to make a bad choice here and there. Luckily, we can learn from their mistakes. Here's a rundown on what celebrity trends aren't worth the money or the time it takes to recreate them.

Drop-Crotch Pants

Unless your name is Aladdin or MC Hammer, you have no business wearing drop-crotch pants. If you believe that clothing should actually flatter your body and improve your appearance, I'm sure you agree this trend isn't worth the cash you'll spend to look like a shapeless blob. Celebrities like Will.I.Am have worn pants where the crotch drops down below the knee. If you feel left out because all of your hipster friends are already wearing these pants, don't worry. This is merely a passing trend that hit a few runways, but will never seriously take off.

Open-Toe Boots

Open toe boots are quite literally a walking contradiction. They're futile in winter (who wants their feet to be exposed when it's cold) and really only meant to be worn in the spring and summer months, and that's only if you want to be walking around wearing boots when it's warm outside. Open-toe boots are a disposable trend, and your cash would be better spent on a pair of closed-toe boots that you can wear more often. However, when done right, this look can be very edgy and fun. I just don't think it's worth the Givenchy price tag for something you'll probably only want to wear for one season. That being said, if you have the extra money to spend on this trend, look to fashionistas like Rihanna and Ciara for inspiration.

Purple/Berry Lipstick

The problem I have with purple lipstick is similar to the problem I have with brown lipstick. Dark hues tend to wash out the wearer's entire face. Case in point is Katherine Heigl. Of course, this problem could be combated by caking on a face-full of makeup to enhance your other features. But unless it's Halloween or a special event, I doubt you want to spend the time and energy applying the amount of cosmetic help you'll need to balance out your face. Instead, stick to neutrals, pinks and (for those of us with a flair for the dramatic) fiery reds.

High-Waisted Jeans

Let's all learn from Jessica Simpson's infamous fashion faux pas; high-waisted jeans just aren't flattering. Although they may look like a retro throwback from the front, on most of us they just look like "mom jeans" from the back. There's a reason why this trend died in the early '90s; let's not revive it. Unless you're a quirky fashion diva like Chloe Sevigny, stay away. But, if you choose to ignore my advice and take the plunge anyway, just take a look in a 360-degree mirror before you make this risky purchase and make sure you're happy with the way you look from all angles.

Yeah, I can assure you that I won't be seen in high waisted jeans - ever.

  • Thom Andrews5/20/2010

Yes, this is all good advice. However, I will say that a woman who wears berry/purple lipstick may look a little silly, you know she's a kinky tiger!

Disagree about the high waisted jeans- if you're curvy, they're pretty bad. But not every woman is curvy, and if worn correctly, they can look charmingly vintage.
