Celebrity is a fun game that changes every time you play. All players write down 5 celebrities on 5 separate slips of paper (if children are playing, we try to use celebrities or characters the children will know, like Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean or Zac Efron from High School Musical). These celebrities' names go into a hat in the middle of the table and the party goers break into teams. One member of team 1 starts Round 1 by pulling a name out of the hat and describing the celebrity, trying to get their teammates to guess the identity of their celebrity. You can say as many words as you like. "He is a great basketball player for the Los Angelos Lakers" is a good clue. Hopefully your teammates will shout out "Kobe Bryant!" and then you go on to the next clue. Try and get as many as you can in an allotted time (usually a minute), then it is the other teams turn. Round 1 is over when all of the clues have been read. Tally up your score and return all the clues back into the hat.
Round 2 is started the same way, but now players can only use 1 word to describe their celebrity. You can use as many motions as you like (think Charades) but only one word. So if you drew Kobe again you might say basketball or Lakers. If your partners weren't paying attention (or can't remember), you'll have to get up and start practicing free throws, or mimicking slam dunks. Be creative! Once they've gotten the clue you can move on to the next celebrity. Round 2 ends when all the celebrities have been guessed. Tally up the points and move on the Round 3.
Round 3 is even harder still. Now you can't speak any words. You can only use motions. Hopefully your partners were paying attention! Now when you draw Kobe you can only start dribbling around on the imaginary court. If your partners can't remember you have to continue acting until the time runs out (if children are playing we sometimes add a "pass" so they can pass on tough clues).
This is a fun party game because everyone is up and moving and even children can be involved. The next time you play it will be different, because different people choose different celebrities. For a harder twist, try coming up with specific categories like Television Stars or Award Winners. Once I made all 5 of my clues about famous Phils. We've also done a game show category which was a big hit with the kids! Be creative and have fun! I guarantee Celebrity will be a party favorite!
