Celebrity Generosity: Which Celebrities Actually Give Away Portions of Their Fortune

Helena LeFevre
We often hear of celebrities dressing up, looking pretty and smiling for cameras while appearing to be pressing issues of importance. They give heartfelt, misty-eyed speeches and most times probably sincerely care about their adopted issue.

Everyone needs to do more for the world, whether Hollywood royalty or average American peons. Most Americans enjoy the benefits of living in one of the richest countries in the world and owe our duty to humanity by helping those who are not capable of helping themselves. It is an even greater burden of responsibility placed on the shoulders of celebrities who are in great positions of influence and means.

Donations of celebrity time and face should not go without applause for raising donation finds for uncountable causes. But celebrities exist in the richest one percent of the world, and often spend more than most people's life savings in one shopping spree or walk down the red carpet, maybe even on one handbag. How many celebrities put their money where their mouth is, actually giving away some of their hard-earned personal wealth?

Jackie Chan reportedly donated $100, 00 to Chrysalis, a Los Angeles-based charity fighting homelessness. He also donated $64, 000 to UNICEF to aid in the tsunami relief effort.

Celine Dion made a contribution of one million dollars to aid with the hurricane Katrina effort.

Nicholas Cage also gave away one million dollars to the Katrina effort.

Sandra Bullock shared one million dollars with the American Red Cross after Sept. 11th, and another million for aid in tsunami relief in December 2004.

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills donated 1.9 million dollars for aid after the tsunami, in addition to tirelessly advocating the Adopt-A-Landmine charity.

Steven Spielberg bestowed 1.5 million for the tsunami effort, and another 1.5 million for aid of hurricane Katrina.

Angelina Jolie has donated over $3 million of her personal wealth to United Nations Refugee Agency, in addition to being their goodwill ambassador since 2001. She and Brad Pitt reportedly recently funded a medical facility in the Sudan.

In 2001, Arnold Schwarzenegger evidently shared 15 percent of his entire income that year, totaling $4.1 million to various charities including the Nelson Mandela children's fund and the Twin Towers fund.

No list of generous celebrities is complete without mentioning Oprah Winfrey, reportedly having donated $52 million of her own money in 2005 only to various charities including her own and the Hurricane Katrina effort.

Many times my babies slept behind my desk on Sat's because I cldn't find a sitter. And whether I was sick or not I got up and went to work. During one period I had a full leg cast on and should have been home in bed, but I didn't have the luxury of a choice. I made it through. My daughters both graduated high school and are making a good living for themselves. And I can't say the same for my all my nieces and nephews. As my brothers and sisters took a completely different path than I did. Work hard, choose your friends carefully, stay on top of what your children are doing and who they're doing it with. You can rise above the "single parent" trap. It sucks and it's HARD. And you don't have any wiggle room for mistakes. Hang in there. God bless you all.

    cont.
I did provide them a drug free, christian home and raised them to know the value of a dollar. From the time I left home I never asked my family help. We lived on what I made. And sometimes that meant walking to work because I had to choose between gas or lunch money. I've never received food stamps or unemployment checks. I worked hard and hated my job but I hated it silently because it WAS a job. And I didn't quit because someone made me mad or I thought I was smarter than the boss (even though I was). LOL. I am telling my story because all to often I read post on sites like this and realize that I was a fine line from ending up like many of the people who post comments. That line I wouldn't cross had all the wrong influences on it and while young people my own age were out having fun I was sitting home counting coins and praying. Please don't think I'm judging anyone ... I'm not. I'm just offering some advice to all the single parents. Many times m

I once was a single mother of two. I was molested as a child as well as physically abused. I often went hunger as a child. And have blocked all my memories (most of them) from that time. I ran away at 17 after a brutal beating from my father. For a short time I live in a shelter. I was able to find a job and enrolled a program at school that allowed me to work half days and go to school the other half. I saved every penny I could get my hands on. And none of them came to me by illegal means. I didn't do drugs and still don't I do have an occasional drink, but they are few and far between. I was able to rent a trailer and buy a 20 year old car after a few months. I finished high school and work two jobs to get by. I met my husband and we had two children. The marriage failed but we remained friends and still are. My girls are both grown and I'm very proud of them. I wasn't able to provide them a lot of "stuff" but I did provide them a drug free, christian home

Most celebrities give very few actual dollars. They are famous for setting up fundraising events (like Tim McGraw and Faith Hill) such as concerts where the only thing they give is a few songs. Or they give something like a purse or guitar to raffle off. Or they set up some funky foundation in their name that other people pay for.
I have very little respect for many of them. And yes, I give to charity. And I know it is their money to do with what they want, but I still don't like to hear about all their excesses, especially at Christmas.
