Celebrity Marriages Unravel as Ryan Reynolds, Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Hurley and Michael C. Hall Divorce

Ryan Reynolds, the "Sexiest Man Alive" according to People Magazine, and Scarlett Johansson announced today that they are separating; earlier in the week, British sex symbol Elizabeth Hurley and her husband Arun Nayar announced they are splitting; finally, the married co-stars of Dexter, Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter, are also getting divorced.

What is going on with celebrity divorces? There seems to be an inordinate amount of them in recent days.

Reynolds and Johansson began dating in 2007 and have been married for about two years. For a while, things have been reportedly uncertain with the couple, as Johansson, in particular, has vaguely alluded to the difficulties in being in a relationship. News stories, such as Johansson hanging out in New York City with Guns 'N Roses' lead singer Axl Rose, began appearing in the media earlier this year.

Today, the couple released a statement reading, "After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

Johansson and Reynolds are not the only celebrity couple divorcing. Elizabeth Hurley, we learned, has been separated from her husband, Arun Nayar, another cricketeer, for months. Rumors of an affair between her and Australian born cricketeer Shane Warne are swirling. Warne, 42, is considered one of the best cricket players, 'or bowlers' of all time. His off the field life has been marked by repeated scandals through the years, including several instances of infidelities. Warne confirmed on his website that he, too, is separated from his wife.

Finally, the star of the Showtime hit show Dexter, Michael C. Hall, is getting divorced from his wife and co-star, Jennifer Carpenter. While few celebrity divorces truly shock that many people, this one seems to be surprising many.

A friend of Hall's said, "This is sad. They are both such good people who truly care about each other, but as they say, cancer often brings couples closer together - but sometimes the pressures of dealing with that disease break up relationships too. This is one of those cases."

Hall and Carpenter met on the set of the show in 2006, began to date, and were married on December 31, 2008. So they will technically make their 2 year anniversary, their divorce is expected to be finalized a short while later.

While 2010 was the year of celebrity sex tapes, the closing weeks of the year seem to be all about celebrity divorces as Elizabeth Hurley, Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds, and Michael C. Hall prepare for life after marriage.
