Celebrity Moms that Mothers Look Up To

Kathryn Mitschelen
The dictionary defines mother as a female parent. I define mother as the most important, full time job you will ever hold. You must be able to run on little sleep, clean up unspeakable bodily fluids, comfort hurt feelings when needed and know when to give a little push to encourage your child to achieve to the greatest of their ability. Here are five celebrity moms that I feel exhibit exemplary mom qualities and that non-celebrity moms can look up to.

Faith Hill

This celebrity mom in her early 40's is someone mothers can look up to. She immediately came to mind when I began this article because of the grace and knowledge she exhibits when she speaks. Her children, Grace Katherine 11, Maggie Elizabeth 10, and Audrey Caroline 7, are lucky to have a mom who realizes what is most important in life. Faith says her marriage to her husband is vital to a strong family and they work continuously at it. And she always puts her children first, bringing them along on tour so they are near her, making sure the family is never apart for more than three days, and that the kids are doing well in their school studies. I believe every mom can benefit by learning from Faith that a strong marriage is vital to the success of a family unit, and that by keeping your children close but letting them discover their own individual talents children will thrive.

Michelle Obama

This most prominent and important celebrity mom in our nation right now is someone everyday mothers can look up to. Michelle Obama, in her mid-40's, is a mother first and foremost, before anything else. She has always said she is the mother of Malia (10) and Sasha (7) first, and then she is first lady, etc. I think that is most important her children to hear, because every child needs to know they come first to their mother, before careers and anything else. Mrs. Obama will have a difficult time shielding her children from the spotlight, but because of her strong and grounded personality, I think she is quite capable. Everyday mothers can learn from this celebrity mom by always putting our children first, and making sure we tell our children that so they hear it aloud.

Jennifer Garner

This is one celebrity mother everyday moms can certainly relate too. She married her husband in June 2005, and in December 2005 her first child, Violet (now 3), was born. You can do the math. This was a pregnancy first, marriage second relationship that millions of everyday mothers in the world can relate too. But, she made her marriage work and the couple just welcomed newborn Serephina to the world in January 2009. Photos are always being snapped of Jennifer in no make-up, heading to the park to play with her daughter, etc, and I think that is what makes her such a great celebrity mom for everyday mothers to look up to. She puts her children first and every mother can look up to that quality.

Brooke Shields

Though she may not be America's favorite celebrity mother, I think this celebrity mother is one that everyday moms can look up to. I believe this because Shields, mid 40's, had a difficult time with postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Rowan, 6, and she had the courage to talk about it. I think everyday moms need someone to look up to who has had trouble and struggles with motherhood. Brooke Shields shows us that struggles are a part of life, and you have to work through them to achieve success and be the best mom you can. Shields also has another daughter, Grier, age 3.

Gwyneth Paltrow

This thirty-something celebrity mom rounds out my list of the top five celebrity moms that everyday moms can look up to. She has two children, Apple, 5, and Moses, 3, and doesn't employ a nanny to take care of them. But that isn't the reason I put her on this list. I added her because you never really hear about her, and that is what makes her so great. She goes about doing her business being a mom without a lot of hoopla and attention. And really, that's what being a good dedicated mom is. Do your job, and do it well, and the attention will come to you anyway, in the form of your children succeeding and growing to be productive members of society.
