Celebrity Sex Tapes: the New PR Vehicle

Claudette Ellyse
As of late, celebrity sex tapes are becoming a regular thing to hear about. Today, I heard that Gene Simmons even has a sex tape supposedly. Whether or not it is really him, it doesn't matter to me. I just want to know why it seems like every celebrity is coming out with a sex tape. In my opinion, some celebrities are using them as a way to gain fame.

Of course there is a certain fascination with the life of a famous person and their sex tapes are just part of that. Certainly, a celebrity sex tape can easily give the most insightful look into a person's life. When is someone being more real than in the middle of sex? There is definitely an obsession with learning more and more about famous people and how they live. That's why the tabloids are selling like crazy.

Celebrities aren't the only one making sex tapes, of course. The average person out there can easily obtain a video camera these days and tape whatever they please. When that average person does, we don't hear about it in the news. Are these regular people able to just keep a better handle on where these tapes are after they make them? I don't think so.

There are certain celebrity sex tapes out there such as the ones by Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian that have been rumored to been released, at least to some extent, by the celebrity themselves. I'm not saying that those rumors are true for those two, but why would a celebrity release something like that?

If they are really made just for the people participating in the sex tape, shouldn't that be something that we wouldn't be hearing about on the news? Isn't it something that you would know was made and therefore want to keep it under lock and key? With all of the power, fame, and money most of these celebrities have, doesn't it seem like it would be easy to protect such things as their sex tapes?

Then again, would some of these celebrities be as famous as they are if it hadn't been for those sex tapes? There's really no way to tell, but when most of the conversations about that celebrity revolves around the sex tape that was released of them, it's hard to say that it really hurt their career. There's an old adage that there isn't such thing as bad publicity. Maybe that's what some of these celebrities are thinking when these tapes come out publicly. In the case of Dustin Diamond of former Saved by the Bell fame, he even promotes his sex tape. Why? To me, that's obvious. I'm actually discussing him, along with others. He wasn't on the minds of most people until this type of exposure happened for him.

I did a search today on the phrase "celebrity sex tape" and Google came back with over 330,000 results. The first one was even a Wikipedia page which I'm putting a link up to in the Resources section on the left hand side of this article. If you go to that page, it lists the different celebrity sex tapes that are out there.

The supposed Gene Simmons sex tape, though he has denied it is him in it, is just another in the long list of celebrity sex tapes. Whether or not these celebrities are releasing them on their own or they are being stolen from them and leaked on the Internet, it doesn't matter. Unless they are doing something illegal, will the exposure that comes from being included in the list of celebrities with sex tapes hurt them? I don't think so.

I wonder about these "leaks". Or "plants"? Didn't Pam and Tommy Lee (was it them?) have one that was truly leaked and then they demanded to be paid the profits? That was proven in court to have been stolen from their home and never intended for public release. As for the others, publicity ploys for sure!
