Celebrity Tousled Hair for Busy Women

Smarter Not Harder Tousled Style

April Bair
The tousled look is showing up everywhere because it's a cheap, temporary, versatile style that anyone can achieve. But for those of us with fine hair it may take longer than the morning routine allows.

Not to worry! If the popular formula for celebrity tousled hair is too time consuming or intimidating for you, just go back to basics. Before women owned curling irons, hot rollers and blow dryers the tousled look was everywhere.

To achieve this style by working smarter not harder and minimizing the time in front of the mirror follow these 3 rules and 6 steps.

Rule 1: Hair must be dry when you do your morning style or the look won't hold.

Rule 2: Hair must be clean but remember that most American women wash their hair much more frequently than is needed. Many of us can wash our hair every other day and look great. To stifle an oily crown use a root lifter or hair spray at the roots .

Rule 2: Don't brush your curls or they will frizz!

With that in mind lets move onto getting your great celebrity tousled hair the less fuss way!

Step 1: Apply root lifter to dry hair after washing and brushing or combing straight.

Step 2: Divide dry hair into sections at least 1/2" wide. You will set some, not all of these layers to curl overnight.

Step 3: Choose some (not all) of the sections and apply mousse or setting lotion (you may need to dampen you hair slightly depending on the specific product you choose) then wrap these hair sections into rag curlers for the night. you may wish to but the remaining hair into a loose braid. Rag curlers are soft bits of rag or padded foam. You can use round plastic curlers but these are less comfortable to sleep in!

Step 4: In the morning apply light hairspray to uncurled sections of hair (do not moisten) and curl using large barrel curling iron on sections about 1 inch across (1/2 barrel is good for many people).

Step 5: Release the rag curls and gently flip hair upside down to tousle style into place with fingers. Do not brush hair as this will result in frizzing. Style with barrettes, headbands or leave down as desired!

Step 6: Spray with finishing hairspray and enjoy your day scrunching and adjusting your hair as needed!

  • Let your hair curl at night for quicker styling and staying power.
  • Add some softer iron curls in the morning for a less perfect look.
  • Pick don't brush for tousled style.
The difference between bed head and awesome style is having clean, healthy hair with a good cut before you start to style.
