Celebrity Twitter Wars: Nigel Lythgoe and Lee DeWyze Are Not Warriors Yet

Meucci Cameron
The latest celebrity Twitter war has Nigel Lythgoe battling Season 9 "American Idol" champ Lee DeWyze on why DeWyze did not appear on stage during the finale. Lythgoe, the show's executive producer, started it when he tweeted his disappointment in DeWyze for not handing the trophy over to new winner Scotty McCreery on finale night. According to DeWyze, he was not asked until the last minute and felt it would take away from McCreery's moment. It turned into a kitten fight when DeWyze continued to thank "Idol" staff for all they've given him, and Nigel tweeted that he no longer wished to comment on the story.

Lythgoe gets a few warrior points for starting the public argument, but he engaged the wrong celebrity. DeWyze was not willing to fight, so it was a bit like lodging an attack on Switzerland. If Nigel plans to become a full fledged Twitter warrior he'll have to take some instruction from the pros below.

Perez Hilton

Ready, willing and more than happy to take on or start any gossip war, Perez Hilton takes the prize for biggest Twitter warrior. His battles include those with John Mayer after the now infamous physical attack Perez received when he name-called Will.i.am and Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas. Mayer tweeted to Perez that he'd basically brought all of the drama on himself. Imagine that -- Perez, bring on drama?

Charlie Sheen

They don't call him Crazy Charlie for nothing. Sheen took his feud with "Two and a Half Men" producer, Chuck Lorre to the Twitterverse with all the venom of a scorned woman. Sheen managed to amass a daunting army of followers in near record time too.

Give Sheen some credit though, he knows when to wave the white flag. After naming Ashton Kutcher as Sheen's replacement on "Two and a Half Men," Sheen had nothing but love for the Twitter King Kutcher. As for "Men" producer Chuck Lorre, the war rages on with Sheen tweeting that he be elected into the "Troll Hall of Fame." Ah, to be "winning."

Lindsay Lohan

If you are on house arrest or in the county jail more than you're in movies you have plenty of time to hone your Twitter warrior skills. Lohan has had her most epic Twitter wars with ex-girlfriend Samantha Ronson. Both chose the public battleground to air their love/hate relationship. Neither won -- though Lohan has a few thousand more followers. So, there's that.

Honorable mention goes to Travis Barker, who took the custody battle with his ex, Shanna Moakler, to the Twitterverse. In an especially nasty war, Barker tweeted continually about his feelings, or lack there of to put it lightly, for his kids' mom. Perez Hilton (who else?) involved himself in the Twitter fight saying it was not the place to air that sort of laundry. For once, and only once, I agree with Perez.

It's enlightening, and not often in a good way, to see today's celebrities voicing their unedited opinions in real time on Twitter and other social media outlets. I'm not sure it's good for their careers, but it certainly takes away the shroud of mystery that used to cloud our impressions of them.
