Cell Phone Brain Tumor Risk Confirmed

In a new statement released by the Toronto Public Health department, government officials are warning parents to limit their children's use of cell phones, due to the risk of brain tumors. While dismissed even a few years ago as mere hearsay, the abundance of studies linking long-term cell phone usage to brain tumors has caused the Toronto government to step in and officially warn parents of the damage that could be done to their children in the long run if they become overly dependent on cell phones now.

There is not a well-established group of studies linking cell phone usage to brain tumor risks. A Finnish study performed two years ago, the second definitively linking brain tumors and cell phones, found that the risk for a brain tumor can go up 270% for habitual cell phone users. The study, which compared 1,521 cell phone users with brain tumors to 3,301 control members without tumors. What they found was that, if one uses a cell phone for more than 2000 hours in their lifetime, the risk of getting a brain tumor increases by 270% on the side on which the phone is held. It also showed that people under 20 were especially at risk.

It should be noted that none of these studies claim that the use of a cell phone will lead to an immediate brain tumor. They all claim that the tumor will take time to show up. They also claim that the most at-risk group are children and toddlers.

The Toronto statement recommends, therefore, advising children to use landlines as much as possible, especially for quick calls. They also recommend keeping essential cell phone calls to under 10 minutes, in order to minimize the exposure of the brain to the radiation.

In response to these studies and warnings, cell phone companies are trying to minimize the risk tamp down any public concern about the dangers of using their products. As tobacco companies did before them, they are doing this largely by funding their own research, which is universally showing cell phone usage to be safe.

The tie-breakers between those funded to find problems and those funded to find no problems is inevitably public health organizations. Toronto joins many European countries, including France and England, in warning its populous about the possible dangers of cell phones. While Health Canada has no immediate plans to issue a warning, it is still being seen as a breakthrough for the proponents of cell phone safety, who maintain that the studies done linking brain tumors and cell phone usage are definitive.

This is a great concern, thank goodness I have something that has been proven and tested to block up to 99% of the radiation that goes in my ear when using a cell phone or cordless phone.

I've always wondered about this. Love Patricia's comment.

Hm, brain tumors might explain why they think it's okay to drive and use a cell phone at once.

Maybe it will give the cell-phonies something to think about.
