Cell Phone Game Review: Gameloft's Midnight Pool

Pocket This Game for Some Serious Fun

Andrew Berry
It is truly hard to find a good cell phone game these days, as there are not many out there. However, I have stumbled upon one truly great cell phone game that I highly recommend downloading, as it is guarenteed to entertain you for hours on end. What is this amazing cell phone game? Gameloft's original 'Midnight Pool'. I have never experienced such a fun cell phone game that was even comparable to Midnight Pool.

What makes Midnight Pool so unique and fun? Midnight Pool has catchy music and graphics, and of course, the gameplay is top of the line.

The modes you can play in are Quick Game, Tournament, Versus, and Challenges. A Quick Game is self explanatory, as it is a fast pick-up game where you do not really pick any options. A Tournament is much lengthier, and should only be played when you have an abundant amount of time on your hands. You also gain money in Tournament mode, and place bets on the match you're about to play. Versus is the mode where you pit your skills against your friends, and show them that you're the boss in this game.

The Challenge mode is much different from the other, so it deserves it's own little section. Challenges are set obstacles that the game sees if you can overcome. In some Challenges the player must use special techniques to overcome to obstacle, or obstacles. Such techniques include using spin on the cue ball, or jumping the cue ball over other balls. In some Challenges, the computer will tell you to try and get some balls in the pockets with only a certain amount of shots. For example, one Challenge is titled "All In 3", where there are four other balls, aside from the cue ball, and you must get them all in pockets within three tries. Obviously in this situation the player you can't straight shoot the balls since there's not enough shots for that, so the player needs to use other tricks such as backspin and so on.

In Midnight Pool, you can also check your scores against the other characters in the games.

One of the best features of Midnight Pool are the options that you can play around with. You can even change the cue color and the table color, as well turning off the music and making the aiming line invisible.

Tutorials to learn tricks in the game that are not "obvious" are also present. In the tutorials section you can enter one of the subcategories which include Basic Controls, 'English' (spin), Jumpshots, Masse (making a ball go around another ball) and Advanced Controls. All of these tutorials help immensely with future gameplay, and it can put your friends in shock when you make that amazing shot.

Overall, I highly suggest Gameloft's 'Midnight Pool'. The possibilites in the game are large, and will keep you entertained for a long, long time. And isn't that what games are all about? Fun and entertainment, while also giving you a long lasting fun experience. Midnight Pool bankshots fun to another whole level.

Why hasn't anyone written a "walkthrough" for all these challenges? Spike's was easy. what about the rest? Once you get past the first few, they get way too tricky for me.

k i feel pretty stupid but whats 3 hours:S:P and how do you beat this?

  • xh1gHxVoLt4g3x6/25/2008

Yo I did exactly what 3 hours said and beat Spike's challenge. I just wanted to add an extra pointer 4 others reading this.... When you aim your cue stick towards the right side; watch the handle of your cue stick and move it where the handle of your cue sits on the letter "M" in Menu. Then do everything else that was mentioned above and its money

Can anyone tell me how to conquer Spike's challenge at the end?

  • Lau3/13/2008

I get how it's supposed to work - but where (ish!) do you need to aim on the right rail?

  • Thankful1/27/2008

I have done everything on this game 100 times as I play it on the bus on my way home from work but I never could get Spikes Challange. I knew the interwebs would have the answer. Thanks!
