Cell Phone News: Motorola Devour Phone for Under $30 and MetroPCS' New Samsung Caliber

Finding Affordable Cell Phones Has Never Been Easier

The Motorola Devour Android phone for Verizon, which you may remember as the lucky cell phone that joined Megan Fox in the bathtub in the Superbowl commercial, is available from several online retailers for $29.99 with a Verizon Wireless plan.

The Devour seems to get rather polarized reviews. Some hate it, some love it, and some just don't care. It is the second Verizon Android phone and the first to use the Motoblur social media streaming and aggregating technology from Motorola. Motoblur has so far only been available on the underachieving Motorola Cliq.

The first thing you notice about the Devour is the design. It is a little larger than most other smartphones and has an almost industrial look to it. And this phone is solid. The slide-out keyboard just feels solid and like you couldn't snap it off if you tried to with your best Hulk grip.

Some see the size of this phone as a negative, but when you actually put it in your hands, it doesn't feel that large. Still, the Motorola Devour may be a tight squeeze in pockets of the skinny pants that are all the rage these days. Hey, I own a pair, so I'm not judging.

One "pro" of this phone is Motoblur, which makes keeping tabs on your social life via social media easy as pie. In fact, you may get too much information from this software. Another "pro" is the easy access to Google applications like Gmail. The phone is also very sturdy, has a very nicely functioning keyboard, and a nice looking, responsive, and brilliantly colored screen.

Samsung Caliber for MetroPCS

MetroPCS recently debuted a new cell phone called the Samsung Caliber, adding the phone to its prepaid phone lineup. It seemingly has replaced the Samsung Finesse as the main smartphone for this service. I know that's not an entirely accurate statement, but the Finesse is nowhere to be seen on the MetroPCS website.

Samsung Caliber has a 3.2 inch screen, a 3 megapixel camera, full HTML browser, 3G, expandable memory, and Touchwiz functionality. Touchwiz gives you a bunch of widgets on the "homepage" of the phone that function as shortcuts to the things you want your phone to do.

The phone retails at $249, but MetroPCS provides a $90 discount to that price, which puts this phone into contention. $150 makes it a possibilty, whereas $249 puts it a little farther from that, in terms of what prepaid users are looking for. Still, the Caliber is a nice phone option.

There are a lot of great cell phone deals out there--both on prepaid and postpaid plans. Waiting a few months after a phone is released is the best time to buy. You know if the phone is a good contender or if it was all hype.
