Cell Phones Abroad

Since I started traveling abroad I have found it easy to cancel my phone contracts in the US and get a new cell phone abroad wherever I am traveling for an extended period of time. Most providers in the US will cancel your contract if you cannot get service with their phone abroad. When I left for Taiwan I had Verizon. I had one more year on my Verizon contract, luckily they said they wouldn't charge me the phone cancelling fee because their phone doesn't work in Taiwan.

Once I arrived in Taiwan I got a free Nokia phone in Taipei, one that requires a SIM card. I can use this phone all over Taiwan and once I travel to other parts of Asia I can buy another SIM for any country I visit. I have found it very convenient I can use the same phone in many countries and not be tied into a contract or a phone that only works in one place. The phone itself is free in Taiwan, and the cost per month is about $30 which includes 700 minutes a month as well as text messaging.

I have found having this phone for the local area is very handy, but I prefer to use Skype when I make international calls. I have no roaming charges with this phone as long as I pick up a new SIM card in the city I am traveling in. I have found using an international cell phone abroad is much cheaper than many of the phone packages in the US. I can use my phone again once I return to the US once I find a provider that uses SIM cards for their phones. I will have to find a provider who doesn't have restrictions about phones, meaning I am able to my phone for their SIM card. I also like the fact that since I arrived in Taiwan I can get a really nice free phone and cheap package, I didn't feel as though I needed to be completely cut off from the rest of the world just because I moved to a new place.

I was lucky enough to have a friend in Taipei help me get a phone since I do not speak Chinese. This also helped with the cost of the monthly contract because the shop we bought the service from felt confident selling to a local person rather than a foreigner like myself. I know many people who buy the pay as you go phone cards pay quite a bit more money than I do,at my low cost of $30 per month. If you are traveling abroad and working, but do not know anyone else, my suggestion is to wait and ask someone to help you get a phone. Miscommunication can easily happen if you do not know how to speak the language where you will be living.
