Over the last couple of years cell phones have become popular, especially with school-aged children because they can talk and text their friends. Unfortunately, it is this very reason that schools have banned cell phones. Not only do they cause a distraction, but they also allow students to cheat. However, as a parent I do not feel it is appropriate for a school to deny any student the right to bring a cell phone to school.
Many individuals will probably disagree with me but take a moment and picture your child. Imagine him or her walking home from school. Now imagine them being followed. As a parent would you not want them to have the opportunity to dial 911? What if there was an accident on the way home? Perhaps a walking buddy is hit by a car. Maybe they decide they don't want to come home, instead they want to go to the library or hang out at a friend's house.
I want my son to be able to reach me and moving to the city was big change for a ten-year-old boy going in the fifth grade. Since it was a huge change, we made the decision to purchase him a cell phone to carry with him in case of emergencies.
I remember on the first day of school. He calls me because he missed the bus home. This was very scary for him, because he was not sure what to do or how he would get home. It was a comfort to be able to talk to me while he waited for his father, and he still carries his cell phone with him. However, we do have one rule when it comes to school. He has to leave the phone in his locker.
I feel this is acceptable and should be allowed. Unfortunately, there are students who bring their phones to the classroom. My nephew was one of them, and he ended up getting it confiscated by his teacher after it went off.
However, it does not matter what the teacher's rules are or the schools, what matters is allowing our children to contact us. School should never deny a child the right to call home, but students should respect the school enough to keep their cell phones in their lockers.
