Cell Phones for Seniors!

My Top Five Recommendations!

Lorraine Laughlin
All senior citizens should have a cell phone in case of emergencies or just to chat when they want to. They should be simple, easy to use and affordable as some seniors are on a fixed income. My top five recommendations include large back lit keypads so it's easier to see and dial, large bright screens, easy to use menus, longer battery life and strong speakers so they can hear clearly. Most seniors don't want all that fancy technical features most of the cell phones have today. Just simple, basic and affordable.

The Verizon Cell Phone for Seniors, the Samsung Knack SCH-U310.

This is just a simple flip phone with all the features I've listed above and it has special 911 key that allows the user to push one button. This phone is $39.99 per month with a 2-year contract.

The Jitterbug Phone by Samsung.

Large keypad, powerful speakers, easy menu and 24-hour Jitterbug operators that help you update your phone and call you by name. This phone is $147 and the plans start at $14.99 per month.

Consumer Cellular featuring the Doro PhoneEasy.

The Doro PhoneEasy 345 is exclusively for seniors for only $30, and plans start at only $10 per month. There is a one-time activation fee for $35 and there are no contracts to sign. If you are a member of AARP or AAA, you also receive a discount.

A.T.& T.'s New cellphone for seniors, the Pantech Breeze.

This is a wonderfully simple new design for seniors and plans start at $39.99 per month with a 2-year contract and the phone is FREE.

Net10 Wireless Prepaid, Pay-As-You-Go Phone.

If you don't want to mess with contracts or just need a phone for emergencies, this is the way to go. The phones are simple and easy to use, you can get them for $29.99 at Walmart or Target with 300 minutes included and the the 300 minute cards are only $30 with $15 per month plans. Simple, easy and affordable.

Any one of the above cell phones would be a good choice for your grandma or grampa. Any senior citizen will find these phones easy to use and definitely affordable. Happy Shopping!

Although still a little new at this, I've always enjoyed writing. Some articles are researched, others just come from the heart and most are from personal experiences. I'm single, no kids, and a student......  View profile

So, there is some cell phone competition out there for seniors. Another value I would like to add about the senior value phone, no activation fees or termination fees for that matter. You just buy the phone, activate, and add airtime. As long as you continue to add on every 90 days your service will work. In case you're not good at remembering to do that, you can register your phone and credit card and it's done automatically for you.

First, I'd like to thank everyone for your comments and suggestions. And I have to agree with the majority response here, Anne, regarding the Tracfone. Even though you are paying for it, you really don't want to pay more for what your mom is going to use it for. If she just uses it for a few calls a day, I think the Tracfone for seniors is the best choice. I DO here good things about the Just5 phone, as well as the Jitterbug but you just can't beat the Tracfone when it comes to price, I agree with BrianS, that the reviews ARE pretty solid. Thanks for writing and please let me know how she likes it and what you chose for her.

I'm looking to buy a cell phone for my elderly mom and have narrowed my choices down to two...the Jitterbug and TracFone SVC. Both phones are pretty basic but the SVC seem to be the most economical route and knowing my frugal mom, she'd probably like for me to go with this one although I will be footing her bills. The only thing that holds me back right now is the Jiiterbug has the 24 hour operator which souds really great. Any thougths or personal expeirence you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I agree that the svc is the best choice since it's from Tracfone who are well known for cheap phones that work well in alot of places, yo! I get one for my Auntie and its perfect for her!

The SVC from Tracfone is the best....big buttons, large text on a lit screen, louder sound for hearing aids and 911 emergency location assist. It uses Tracfone airtime so you can get double minutes, costs $14.99 from K_Mart and service is $7.00 a month!

I think Net10 and Tracfone are in the same family, but Tracfone has a phone service directly geared towards seniors. Onnessi mentioned it before, and my parents love the pricing/functionality of the phone. It really does give me some peace of mind to know that my parents have a phone, but don't have to pay an arm and a leg for it. It makes me happy to know that they actually like it too. At least they haven't run in to any problems yet, and most of the reviews I read are pretty solid. Just thought I'd add my two cents into this discussion.

Here's another that should be kept top of mind. The Senior Value Cell phone by TracFone. Like all their phones, the quality is excellent. Except this one is designed with features that are senior citizen-friendly. The phone is basic and easy to use, with oversized lighted keys and large screen so they can see the numbers displayed perfectly. It's also hearing-aid compatible and comes with 911 emergency location assist. All this for $7 a month. It's already available in many markets, but at Kmarts around the nation. I think this one should definitely be considered and placed high on the list of cell phones for seniors.

I want to add another great senior-friendly phone, which is the Just5 phone. Its personal emergency response system together with its large buttons and bright display can offer you a great experience. Check this link http://www.just5.com/home.php.
