The Celtics are likely to have a very high pick in the 2007 NBA draft, and possibly the number one overall selection.
Kevin Durant is the star at the University of Texas, who were just recently eliminated from the NCAA tournament. The Celtics seem to have a very great deal of interest in Durant, who could certainly help turn their franchise around if drafted.
The Celtics' contact with Durant's family is not allowed by the NBA. Teams are also not supposed to comment about players that they are interested in before the players declare that they are eligible. It has not been long since the NBA outlawed drafting players out of high school. Before the rules, scouts could talk to high school players and draft them before they attended college. It added a lot of pressure to these young athlete's lives. Players are required to be at least one year removed from high school to enter the draft.
This incident is not the first this year, as the Charlotte Bobcats and Golden State Warriors have also been fined for similar situations.
The Celtics are one of the worst teams in the entire NBA with a record of 20-46. This total includes an 18 game losing streak earlier in the season that nearly set an NBA record. They are hoping to get the first pick in the upcoming draft. With lots of young talent already, the Celtics seem to be looking to get even more. They could also be very interested in Durant as a sort of replacement for Paul Pierce when he retires a few years down the road. The Celtics will be looking to make big moves considering that GM Danny Ainge has come under intense criticism for passing up some big names in previous drafts.
The two likeliest picks for the Celtics, if they did get a high pick, are Durant and Ohio State's Greg Oden. Both are candidates for national college player of the year.
