Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America, is found in Nicaragua. Lake Nicaragua clocks in at 8,264 square kilometers (or 3,000 miles), which makes Lake Nicaragua the 21st largest lake in the entire planet. As the largest lake in Central America, Lake Nicaragua stretches 100 miles in length. Lake Nicaragua also dives to a depth of up to 80 feet.

The Ecology of the Largest Lake in Central America:

Lake Nicaragua is a freshwater lake. However, unlike many bodies of fresh water, Central America's largest lake is home to various animal species that are traditionally thought of as saltwater animals, such as sharks (source). In fact, besides being Central America's largest lake, Lake Nicaragua is the only freshwater lake in the world to house saltwater animals.
