Central City, Colorado: A Unique Summer Getaway

Pat Bartels
You often think of Colorado as being a winter destination with all of its skiing, but if you haven't visited in the summer you are in for a treat. Located in the Rocky Mountains just a short drive from Denver, the Central City area is packed with things to do in the summer.

Every summer the Central City Opera hosts their Colorado Summer Music Festival. The opera house is a charming building that was built in 1878 and is the fifth oldest opera house in the country. Seems like an odd place for an opera house as this is deep in mining country. This year's performances include Madama Butterfly, Orpheus in the Underworld, and Three Decembers. The opera performances will begin on June 26th and end on August 8th. You'll want to get to the opera house a little early as there is a free pre-performance preview across the street in the Williams Stables.

As part of the music festival the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program is conducted over a 10 week period. Each year around 30 applicants are chosen to participate. For those who are serious about a career in opera this is a wonderful experience.

Central City not only has wonderful opera, but there are many casinos in the area if you like to do a bit of gambling. There are casinos in Central City itself as well as in neighboring Black Hawk. You can spend the afternoon in one of the casinos and then have a pleasant evening enjoying opera.

If you are an outdoor lover, this is the place to be. You can go hiking, camping, and the more adventurous can go rock climbing or white water paddling. You can take a tour of the Argo Mill, Mine, and Museum. You certainly won't be able to resist going for a drive and seeing the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. You can take your RV and stay in the Central City - Blackhawk Campground.

These are just some of the things that are available in the summer. The casinos are open year round and many of the casinos also include hotels. There are plenty of places to stay and lots of things do to. What are you waiting for make those reservations and get those tickets now. Central City is great place for a fun vacation.

The 2011 Festival will include Bizet's Carmen, the North American premiere of Handel's Amadigi di Gaula, and a rotating double bill of One Acts: Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, Weill's Seven Deadly Sins and Poulenc's Les Mamelles de Tiresias. Check out our visitor information pages for other things to do in the area, too!

Central City and Black Hawk used to be a great family vacation stop, but since they became one big casino, they closed the mining museums and children are treated as persona non grata! It makes me sick, knowing what it used to be!
