The Pizza Shack
1220 N State St
Jackson, Mississippi 39202
(601) 352-2001
The Pizza Shack isn't exactly a hole in the wall. Actually it's not a hole in the wall at all. It just doesn't look like the kind of place that offers such sophisticated options. Reminiscent of Chicago deep dish, this pie is laden with with toppings. Folks this deal. The price for a small pies starts at around five bucks. The menus ranges from the the simple and tasty Three Cheese to complex and delicious. Thai Chicken. The menu also features chicken wings and deli Sandwiches. Located across from the Baptist Hospital there is a constant stream of medical personal keeping them busy. Sometimes it takes a little longer but it's definitely worth the wait.

Soulshine used to be located downtown next to Hal and Mal's. It was groovy place to hang out. With it's tony move to Madison and Brandon the atmosphere is more upscale. The Ridgeland spot is dotted with funky posters of Johnny Cash and the Alman and brothers. The atmosphere has changed and so had the food. I think for the better. As a friend of mine said, "The food has become the focus."
What I find most appealing about this pizza is the crust. It's light and clean tasting but there is also an intriguing ingredient that I can't put the my finger on. Not this matters. I eat in happy oblivion. I recommend the Jacksonian. The garlic white will go to your hips almost immediately but it's worth it. Of course if you are a carnivore you can't go wrong with the Carnivore.
The menu also features tamales that serve as a tasty appetizer.
Old Venice
1428 Old Square Rd
Jackson, MS 39211

Tradition in the key at Old Venice. There are no twist and turns. The sauce is red and the is crust is traditional with your choice of like minded toppings. Stop by for the lunch special and you won't be sorry. Monday's special is my favorite, a spinach pizza. Lots of choices at this spot for the vegetarian or meat eater and they are open for dinner.
While your there check out the breathtaking mural that gives you the feeling of Venice.
Add the ionion salad and you've got a winner of meal.

Post a CommentStayed in Jackson for three days for a convention several years ago. Brother and his family were there last year. I will have to keep these joints in mind should I ever go back. Wish I woulda known back when, or last year to pass along.
