As men and women age they have hormonal changes that may require specific nutrients to remain healthy adults. Multi-vitamin supplements can supply many necessary nutrients, however, some vitamins or minerals that are beneficial for women may be harmful to men. For example, male-oriented vitamins contain less iron than those for women, most men should avoid iron supplements because it may increase their risk of heart disease.

Lycopene - Flaxseed - Saw Palmetto

As a man ages his prostate gland tends to grow putting pressure on his bladder and can lead to prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a benign sometimes painful condition that may cause frequent nighttime urination. Multi-vitamins that are formulated for men contain lycopene to help avoid prostate issues.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death for men. Men who consume tomatoes, which are rich in lycopene, may lower their risk of prostate cancer.

Along with eating tomato products men should take two tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily. Flaxseed contains which omega-3 fatty acids and lignans which are antioxidants.

Saw palmetto is an herb that is known to relieve frequent urination due to inflammation of the bladder or prostate.

Coenzyme Q10 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

As adults approach the age of 40, the production of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) slows down and can result in fatigue. To avoid that run-down feeling you may need CoQ10 which is a vitamin-like substance that helps convert food to energy.

Note: If you are taking statin drugs to lower cholesterol, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider about CoQ10 supplements.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men, usually striking in the prime of life. If you do not consume oily fish several times a week, you should supplement your diet with fish oil. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can lower your triglycerides and blood pressure, decrease clotting tendency in the blood and enhance the cholesterol-lowering effects of statin drugs.

Recent studies have shown that green tea compounds that can lower blood pressure and LDL cholesterol and aged garlic extract also has the ability to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Magnesium

Magnesium is essential to heart function and magnesium citrate supplements may protect against hypertension and heart disease. Magnesium citrate is an easily absorbed supplement that can improve men's health. The recommended daily allowance of magnesium for men is 350 mg per day.

Lowered testosterone levels in men may decrease libido, muscle tone and energy. Taking magnesium citrate supplements and increasing your exercise routine can work together to restore your muscles and maintain healthy testosterone levels.
