Chalk it Up to Summer (Summer Poem)

A NaisaiKu is a creative poetic form, somewhat similar to haiku, but linking several syllabically specific stanzas with a repeated title. The title appears throughout a NaisaiKu in caps, occupying this designated spot in each stanza. Basically, each stanza contains two haikus, with the second inverting the first.

  • Concrete images appear on our walkway each summer, as children draw with sidewalk chalk.
  • The front walk looks like a horrific crime scene in summer, with chalk outlines of small bodies.
  • The first swipe of a dog's paw eliminates the chalk evidence.
