Materials

1 wooden and handled breakfast tray
chalk board paint
masking tape or blue painter's tape
red paint (optional)
chalk

Selecting a Chalk Board Paint

There are different types of chalkboard paint to choose from. The chalks come in black or green. For the Valentine's Day Chalkboard Breakfast Tray use black or green with the plain frame. Do not use the green chalk board paint if you are going to paint the wooden tray red.

Be sure to spray the stray on newspapers or cardboard. Krylon spray on chalk board paint can be purchased at craft stores, home improvement stores or discount retailers.

Chalk board paints that can also be painted on are available.

Or, there is a way to make your own chalkboard paint with 6 teaspoons acrylic paint of any color, 3 teaspoons water-based glazing medium (used with acrylic paints), and 1 teaspoon powder tile grout. Mix these ingredients together until it is well-blended. Apply the homemade chalkboard paint with a sponge brush or a paint brush to the tray.

How to Make a Chalkboard Breakfast Tray for Valentine's Day

Decide if you want to paint the exterior of the tray or not. It can be painted red, if that color suits the decor in the recipient's house. Or, keep the tray it's natural wood grain color and leave the wood plain.

Tape up the frame of the tray, that is either painted, or being left natural. Use the masking tape or blue painter's tape. Next, apply the chalkboard paint. Let the chalkboard paint dry and apply two or three more coats. When the entire tray is dry, remove the tape.

Variations for the Chalkboard Breakfast Tray for Valentine's Day

Paint the recipients name on the exterior of the tray for a more personalized effect.

Use decoupage or other decorative craft techniques to decorate the edges of the tray.

Include a small note on the bottom of the Valentine's Day Breakfast Tray.

Be sure to sign your name and the date on outside bottom of the tray.
