Chance is All and Never

H. Ann Myers
I followed you to class first day
You in your jeans so right, I say,
Graceful, compelled me to defer--
Though I'll swear I'm not a stalker--
my plans.

And slumped I bore the same,
When what I wanted was your name,
With you I suffered Coach Football
Who ranting neglected roll call.

Some things are meant and some never
Funny, mean spir'ted, so clever
Very who you are I do know
What you act as is all for show,
Please shut up, Coach, I have to go.

Days are gone long when then I stepped
Into your world--for that once dance
We hung the edge--I have not wept
Nor wished from you a second chance.
